Max Dowman Could Join England Senior Squad Amid Injuries

Thomas Tuchel is seriously considering fast‑tracking Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior set-up as injuries rip through his Nations League plans.

The 16-year-old, already regarded as one of the standout talents of his generation, is under active consideration for a place at the senior training camp at St George’s Park, with Tuchel reshaping his options before a demanding run of fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

Dowman is currently with England’s Under-19s, which makes the logistics simple. If Tuchel gives the green light, the teenager would only have to switch pitches, not postcodes.

For Dowman, it would be another jolt forward in a rise that has barely paused for breath.

He has already etched his name into Premier League history. In March, he scored against Everton at the Emirates Stadium and became the youngest goalscorer the competition has seen, at just 16 years and 73 days.

He has not eased off since. Earlier this month, Dowman struck twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, underlining why he is viewed as one of English football’s most exciting young prospects.

He did not make England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, but his club form has only strengthened arguments that he should be part of Tuchel’s long-term thinking. There has been talk of a loan to secure more minutes this season, although The Sporting News understands the more likely outcome is that he remains at Arsenal.

If Tuchel does bring him in, it would be framed as a look to the future as much as cover for the present.

Tuchel’s plans hit by major withdrawals

Tuchel’s preparations for the Nations League have been complicated by the loss of several key figures.

Rice, the heartbeat of England’s midfield, has stepped away due to concerns over his fitness and workload. Palmer, who forced his way back into the England picture after missing the World Cup, is sidelined with a minor injury.

From Manchester United, both Rashford and Mainoo are out with injury issues of their own. Newcastle’s Livramento completes a list of five withdrawals that has stripped depth and experience from the squad.

The Football Association moved quickly on Monday, confirming that Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted in as replacements.

Their inclusion gives Tuchel more senior options, but Dowman’s possible involvement would be different. It would be a deliberate nod towards the next generation, a chance to expose another teenager to the demands and rhythms of the senior environment before Euro 2028 comes into view.

That approach is already visible. Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha was part of the original senior squad announced on September 18, a clear sign that Tuchel is prepared to reward young talent and accelerate their integration when the opportunity presents itself.

A brutal start to the Nations League

England’s 2026-27 Nations League campaign begins with no easing-in period.

World champions Spain arrive at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a fixture that will test Tuchel’s reshaped squad from the first whistle. After that, England head to Prague to face Czechia on September 29, then travel to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3.
