Ballinora's Season Ends After Appeal Rejected

Ballinora’s last bid to rescue their season has been shut down.

Their appeal to the Munster Council over last week’s controversial ruling in the McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC Group 3 Round 3 clash with Fermoy was rejected on Monday night, confirming Fermoy’s place in the quarter-finals and ending Ballinora’s interest in the competition.

Appeal ends, ruling stands

The decision upholds last Tuesday’s correction to the Glenville fixture, which was originally recorded as a 0-21 to 2-15 draw. After a review, the result was amended to a 0-22 to 2-15 Fermoy victory, a single point swing that changed everything: Fermoy advance, Ballinora are out.

The controversy centred on a scoring error in referee Wayne King’s report. Video footage later showed that a 30th‑minute point from Ben Twomey, followed soon after by a two‑point effort from the same player, had not been properly reflected in the half‑time score.

Instead of Fermoy going in at the break on 0-9, the corrected tally brought them to 0-10. That one extra point at half-time ultimately became the one that separated the sides on paper at full-time.

Ballinora had led 2-7 to 0-9 at the interval as originally recorded, and the club felt the post-match adjustment cut against everything they understood as fair.

“Rules of fair play” row goes nowhere

In a statement last week, Ballinora voiced “huge disappointment” with the ruling and argued that “the rules of fair play” had not been applied. They pledged to “fully consider” their position. They did exactly that.

The club contacted Fermoy directly to seek a replay, hoping sporting goodwill might offer a way out where regulation had not. Fermoy, though, opted to stand by the official post‑match awarding of the game.

That left the Munster Council appeal as Ballinora’s final avenue. Monday night’s verdict closed that door. The original result stands. Fermoy march on to meet Rockchapel in the quarter‑finals, with Macroom set to face Naomh Abán in the other tie. Both games are fixed for Sunday.

Double blow for Ballinora

The failed appeal caps a bruising spell for Ballinora. Their pursuit of a six‑in‑a‑row MJK Oils Muskerry JAHC title also ended at the group stage, undone by a winner‑takes‑all defeat to Grenagh on Sunday.
