Mbappé Addresses Rift Rumors with Dembélé Over Ballon d'Or

What began as a sharp line in a magazine interview has turned into a subplot around France’s national team camp. Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, two pillars of Didier Deschamps’ attack, suddenly found their names tied to whispers of tension, ego and the Ballon d’Or.

Mbappé has now moved to shut it all down.

The spark came on 11 September, in a long interview with France Football. Asked about his chances of lifting the Ballon d’Or in London on 26 October, the Real Madrid forward drew a comparison between his own rise and Dembélé’s more uneven route.

“He has always been considered a talented player. I have always been seen as the chosen one. I was at the top from the start. He had a different path, injuries, but he recovered well,” Mbappé said, reflecting on the careers of the two former PSG teammates.

The “chosen one” line stuck. It bounced around social media, fed debate shows, and quickly turned into a talking point: was Mbappé putting himself above his international teammate?

Two days later, Dembélé gave his answer. Speaking on Ligue 1+, the latest Ballon d’Or winner did not name Mbappé, but he deliberately reached for the same phrase.

“Throughout my entire career, I haven't said a single word, I have worked very hard. As I said, I have never been the chosen one, but I have worked hard, and last year I was rewarded with a fantastic season at PSG. And this year, we'll see, no pressure, calm,” he said.

The echo was impossible to miss. The timing was perfect for drama. France were about to gather again, the Nations League back on the schedule, the Ballon d’Or countdown ticking away. The idea of a rift between two of the dressing room’s biggest figures was too tempting for the rumour mill to ignore.

Back in camp with Les Bleus, Mbappé decided to address it head on.

Speaking to L’Équipe at an event for his new sponsor, the France captain insisted the story had been blown out of proportion and that he had already cleared the air with Dembélé.

“I’ve already talked it over with him and no, there are no tensions. He is a friend. I really think there is no problem at all in that regard, I’m very calm,” the number 10 said.

No hedging, no ambiguity. Just a flat denial of any personal issue.

Mbappé also pointed a finger at the environment around the national team, where every international window seems to demand its own controversy.

“During the Nations League period and with the French national team, you always have to look for a topic of debate, and I think this one is very well chosen,” he added, with a hint of irony.

So the “chosen one” line, which briefly threatened to cast a shadow over France’s attacking partnership, has been folded back into the usual noise around the Ballon d’Or race. The trophy will be handed out in London in late October, and both men remain central to France’s ambitions.

The question now is not whether Mbappé and Dembélé can coexist. It is whether one of them will be the next Frenchman to walk onto that stage and take football’s most coveted individual prize.
