Trevoh Chalobah Joins England's World Cup Squad as Late Replacement
Trevoh Chalobah has been drafted into England’s 2026 World Cup squad as a late replacement after a calf injury ruled out a former Chelsea Academy defender on the eve of the tournament.
The switch, permitted under FIFA rules that allow an outfield player to be replaced up to 24 hours before a team’s opening game, gives the 26-year-old a sudden shot at the biggest stage of all.
Chalobah arrives with only one senior international cap, earned in a friendly against Senegal almost exactly a year ago. Now he steps into a World Cup dressing room, promoted from the fringes to a role that could quickly become significant if injuries bite again or form dips under the Texas heat.
He will at least find a familiar face. The Chelsea defender joins club teammate Reece James in the squad, adding another Stamford Bridge thread to England’s back line as preparations sharpen for their first Group L assignment.
That opener comes against Croatia at Dallas Stadium on Wednesday 17 June, a 9pm (UK) kick-off that will set the tone for England’s campaign in the United States.
The margins are thin at this stage; one injury, one phone call, and a player’s summer changes completely.
For Chalobah, that moment has arrived. England face Ghana next in Boston on Tuesday 23 June, but all eyes, and all pressure, fall first on Dallas and the question that always follows a late call-up: is this cover, or the start of something bigger?
