Spain’s Nations League Squad: Barcelona's Core and Striker Dilemma

Luis de la Fuente’s Spain are about to step into a demanding UEFA Nations League window with a squad that looks familiar in many areas, but with one key battle still wide open.

Midfield: Fermin Steps In, Gavi Waits

The main tweak in midfield is straightforward. Fermin Lopez is expected to come in for Gavi, who will miss the Wembley opener through suspension. It’s another bump in a difficult spell for Gavi, who also lost his starting spot at Barcelona after the injury he suffered at the start of La Liga against Elche.

De la Fuente’s opinion of him hasn’t shifted, though. The coach rates Gavi extremely highly and will not close the door on him under any circumstance. Once he is available and fully fit, the fight for places in that Spain midfield will sharpen again.

The Third Striker Question

Up front, the picture is less settled. Two names are locked in: Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres. Both are certain to travel.

The doubt lies in the role Borja Iglesias filled in the World Cup-winning cycle. His start to the season has been complicated by a soleus muscle problem, limiting his minutes and throwing his place into real jeopardy.

That uncertainty has opened the door to a wave of younger forwards. Sergio Camello, Roberto, Espi and Gonzalo are all pushing hard to claim that third striker slot. One of them could emerge from the chasing pack and land in a Nations League squad that suddenly looks a touch more experimental in attack.

Tight Lists, Heavy Schedule

Spain can only register 23 players for the group stage of the UEFA Nations League, a tighter limit than the 26 allowed in the final phase. The calendar, though, is unforgiving.

Four matches, packed into a short window, will demand rotation. That reality points towards a broader working group, with De la Fuente likely to lean on depth and flexibility even if he must trim down to 23 for the official list.

Barcelona Spine to Carry Spain

At club level, Barcelona are set to form the backbone of this Spain side. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Rodri and Lamine Yamal are all effectively guaranteed a place in the squad.

Gavi and Fermin Lopez could join them, with Xavi Espart also in the frame. If everything falls into place, Spain could head into this Nations League run with as many as 10 Barcelona players in the group, underlining the Catalan club’s influence on the national team’s present and future.

A Brutal Opening Run

The schedule offers no easing-in period.

Spain open their UEFA Nations League campaign against England at Wembley on 26 September, a high-profile test in London to set the tone. Three days later, Croatia arrive in Seville on the 29th, bringing another heavyweight clash.

Then comes a trip north to Oviedo to face the Czech Republic on 3 October, before the window closes with a return meeting against Croatia in Split on the 6th of next month.

By the time Spain leave Croatia, we should know whether De la Fuente’s faith in a Barcelona-led core and a refreshed attack can carry them through one of the most intense stretches of their season.
