The 15-year-old forward has been one of the brightest sparks in United’s youth ranks this season. He scored in both of United’s Premier League 2 fixtures so far, announcing himself with a composed lob from around 20 yards against Ipswich on 24 August, then following it up a week later with a sharp turn in the box, a defender beaten, and a cool finish in a 4-1 win over Leicester.

Those moments did more than light up academy highlight reels. They fed a growing belief inside and outside the club that Gabriel might be fast-tracked into United’s squad for their opening Champions League game against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick watched his first Premier League 2 outing in person, and senior coaching staff were in attendance for the second. The message seemed clear: the club were watching him closely.

Then came the twist.

When United submitted their A list for the Champions League, Gabriel’s name was not on it. For a player under 16, that was the only route into the competition. United went on to beat Sabah 4-0, and Carrick had used all five substitutes by the 72nd minute. Gabriel never had a chance to be involved.
