Logan Dobbs: Gillingham's Surprise Star Defender

Gareth Ainsworth says even he didn’t see this coming from Logan Dobbs.

The 19-year-old defender has forced his way into Gillingham’s plans and stayed there, starting every game so far this season and capping his rise with a first senior goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Tranmere.

He didn’t just score. He set the tone. Dobbs climbed to meet a cross and nodded in the opener, sparking a routine league fixture into something more personal, more emotional, for both player and crowd.

Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, Ainsworth admitted Dobbs has caught him off guard.

“Logan Dobbs has been a surprise package for me this year,” the Gills boss said. When Liam Gordon went down injured in the first game and Sam Gale left for Barnsley, Gillingham’s defensive plan had to be ripped up on the fly. The vacancy was real. Dobbs walked straight through it.

“All of a sudden the door opened and Logan’s been sensational,” Ainsworth said. “And I think he will understand when I say I didn’t know he was capable of – he’s done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here.”

From fringe option to ever-present, Dobbs has turned a problem into a solution. The manager’s language tells its own story: this isn’t a polite nod to a youngster filling in, it’s recognition of someone reshaping the pecking order.

The stands have noticed too. As the ball hit the net against Tranmere, the chant rolled down from the home support: he’s one of our own.

“Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own,” Ainsworth said. “So when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that’s what dreams are made of.”

Gillingham sit 11th in League Two, hovering in that awkward middle ground where the season can still tilt either way. On Saturday they host second-placed Bristol Rovers, a test of nerve and ambition.

Dobbs has already seized one unexpected chance this season. The question now is whether his emergence can help drag the Gills up the table, starting with a statement against promotion contenders.
