Sadio Mané Omitted from Senegal Squad Due to Injury, Says Vieira

Patrick Vieira has moved quickly to cool any storm around Sadio Mané’s surprise omission from his first Senegal squad, insisting the Al-Nassr forward is out only because of a physical problem.

The new head coach stunned many when he unveiled his maiden list without the country’s talisman, leaving Mané out of the group called up to face Mozambique and Ethiopia at the start of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The absence immediately sparked speculation about the 32-year-old’s international future.

Vieira knocked that down at his introductory press conference after being officially presented on Friday. He explained that he had spoken directly with Mané before announcing the squad and that the door remains wide open.

“I spoke with Sadio by phone, and he is suffering from a physical problem, which is why he will not be with us in this camp, but he will probably be present in the next camp,” the French coach said, in comments reported by Senegalese outlet Seneweb.

No rift. No exile. Just an injury and, if all goes to plan, a short absence from the “Lions of Teranga”.

If there were doubts about Mané, there were also questions about Vieira’s own motives. A coach with a high-profile club résumé choosing an African national team job inevitably drew talk about the financial package on offer.

Vieira swatted that away with the same firmness.

“My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said, making it clear that the pull of Senegal ran deeper than any contract figure.

He described how quickly the deal came together. One meeting with the Senegalese Federation was enough. The conversation with the federation president, he revealed, convinced him almost on the spot.

“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” Vieira explained.

There was no long courtship, no drawn-out negotiations. Just a coach who saw a project and jumped.

Backing a golden wave

What drew him in? The answer, in large part, is on the pitch.

Vieira talked about the “exceptional generation” of Senegalese players either already at the top level or about to break through. For a man who has lived the elite game as a World Cup and European Championship winner, the chance to guide that wave was decisive.

“There was an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging, and there was a real opportunity before me to put my top-level experience at their service,” he said.

That word – service – is central to how he framed his mission. This is not just about tactics or reputation. It is about building something new with a group that has already tasted continental glory and now wants to stay there, and go further.

Vieira’s “primary aim”, as he put it, is to pour his experience into Senegal’s next chapter and shape a fresh project with the “Lions of Teranga” and the federation.

The first squad list, and the noise around Mané’s absence, was the opening act. The real judgment will come when that “exceptional generation” either fulfils its promise under Vieira – or leaves Senegal wondering what more it could have been.
