Manchester United’s fight to keep JJ Gabriel is slipping away, and the clearest sign yet came on Wednesday afternoon – the 15-year-old was in Barcelona, sitting down for talks with the Spanish champions.

United still insist he’s going nowhere. The player’s actions say something very different.

From concern to crisis

Concerns inside Old Trafford first surfaced publicly on August 13, when TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United were worried about their chances of keeping the prodigy.

By then, the queue of admirers was already forming. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona had all been alerted to Gabriel’s potential and his situation in Manchester.

A month later, the story escalated.

On September 15, TEAMtalk reported that Gabriel had formally told United he wants to leave. Sources said the attacking midfielder had sent an official notice requesting his academy registration be cancelled with immediate effect – a move that, if successful, would make him a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.

That birthday, October 6, is crucial. It opens the door to an EU move, and Gabriel holds an Irish passport, making any switch to a club on the continent far more straightforward.

Contract row and looming deadline

Bailey underlined the stakes earlier on Friday, explaining the tug of war now developing over the teenager’s future.

“Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and will be eligible to explore a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona once he reaches that age,” he reported, noting that the player’s status in England is “considerably more complicated.”

United’s academy registration with Gabriel runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. Even though the youngster has formally asked for that registration to be cancelled, United have the right to challenge the request – and, according to ESPN, they fully intend to do so.

The club have been preparing a charm offensive. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has stated that United planned talks aimed at changing Gabriel’s mind, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to keep him at Carrington.

The player, though, has pushed ahead.

Barcelona talks turn up the heat

While United dig in, Gabriel has taken matters into his own hands. The Manchester Evening News’ Chief Manchester United Correspondent, Tyrone Marshall, revealed on X at 3:19pm on September 18 that the youngster was in Catalonia.

“JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp,” Marshall posted. “United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc.”

Less than half an hour later, at 3:45pm, Marshall doubled down on the significance of the trip.

“JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc.”

That EU documentation, tied to his Irish passport, would smooth the path to LaLiga even further.

The reports have not come from Manchester alone. Spanish outlet Marca, which leans towards Real Madrid, has also stated that Gabriel is in Barcelona. Journalist Ben Jacobs backed that up, writing on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”

Madrid watching, United resisting

Real Madrid remain firmly in the picture, having already held positive talks with Gabriel, as Bailey previously reported. For now, though, Barcelona have him in their city, at their table, with their project to sell.

United’s stance is clear: they will reject his request to be de-registered and fight to enforce an academy deal that runs until 2027. Any move on October 6 would need FIFA approval and could spark a high-profile legal and regulatory battle over youth contracts and player freedom.

Gabriel, still only 15, has already made his position just as clear. He wants out. Barcelona and Real Madrid are circling.
