Daniel Farke's Team Updates: Gruev Returns, Injury Concerns Ahead

Daniel Farke walked into his media duties with one piece of long-awaited good news – and a couple of unwelcome setbacks.

Gruev back in the frame

Ilian Gruev, out since May with a knee injury, has finally put some proper minutes back into his legs. The midfielder featured for the under-21s and stayed on the pitch for almost the full game.

“After this long-term injury it was important to get his first minutes in the under-21 game. He played nearly 90 minutes and it was good for his confidence and his body. He is available for the weekend,” Farke said.

For a squad that has had to shuffle resources in recent weeks, that availability matters. Gruev’s return offers fresh energy and another option in the middle of the park.

Injury blows for Wilson and Rodon

The optimism around Gruev is tempered by fresh concern over Harry Wilson. The winger has picked up a quad injury and Farke expects him to be sidelined long enough to miss Wales’ upcoming international fixtures as well.

Joe Rodon remains out too, extending a frustrating spell on the sidelines for the defender. At a time when the schedule is already demanding, those absences bite.

Contract talk shut down

Off the pitch, Farke was pressed again on his own future after managing director Robbie Evans told BBC Sport that club and manager are “on the same page” regarding a new deal. The head coach had no appetite to fan the flames.

“No news from my side,” he said. “I spoke at the end of last season long, detailed, open and honest about the situation. I don't want to make a weekly soap opera of it. No-one wants a manager who is always talking about his future and his contract.”

The message was clear: the contract saga will not become a sideshow.

Calvert-Lewin’s England return “fully deserved”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s blistering start to the season has carried him back into the England squad, and Farke was emphatic in his praise.

“Fully deserved. A perfect start to the new season. He's scored goals and has delivered performances. He's played with a good confidence and is in a good rhythm. He definitely deserves this call-up. He's definitely one of the best strikers in this league.”

It is a reminder of how quickly a striker’s fortunes can turn once the goals start flowing and the rhythm returns.

Form no longer a “coincidence”

Farke also pointed to his own team’s impressive run stretching back into last season. For him, this is no hot streak.

“It's not a coincidence any more. It's not just a good period, it's quality that we are delivering. Everyone can be proud of this and take lots of confidence.”

Talk outside the club has already started drifting towards a possible European push. Farke cut that down to size in an instant.

“The first step is always to win 40 points and to make sure we do it as fast as possible. If we do it and there are still games left, we will definitely take it – but my only aim and only focus is to make sure we win the 40 points and play another Premier League season.”

Ambition is welcome. Complacency is not.

Respect for Crystal Palace

Next up are Crystal Palace, and Farke’s respect for the Eagles was unmistakable.

“We face a really strong side. When I speak about Crystal Palace, I can't speak with more respect about them. They have done exceptionally well, especially in the last seasons winning titles. They have done good business in the summer and I think they are stronger this season than last season.”

It is the kind of opponent that exposes any drop in standards. Farke knows it.

Using the break wisely

With an extended international break on the horizon, some managers vanish for a breather. Farke’s plan is a little different.

“We allow ourselves a chance to recover a bit more than is possible in normal time. Then, the work continues. Just because we don't have a game for a while doesn't mean we don't train for a while. There are still players here who need my attention. Sometimes there is more time for the detail and for younger players.”

Recovery, refinement, and a closer look at the next generation. For a side talking about 40 points and survival before anything else, that extra work in the quiet weeks may decide how far this season can really go.
