Rio Ngumoha set to stay at Liverpool amid Arsenal interest

Arsenal’s search for a new left winger looks set to hit another dead end – and this time the answer appears to be coming from inside Anfield.

The Premier League champions have tracked Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha closely, viewing the 18-year-old as a serious option after missing out on Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior in the summer window. Gabriel Martinelli departed, no direct replacement arrived, and David Ornstein has already hinted that he “could see something happening” in January.

That something, though, is increasingly unlikely to be Ngumoha.

Liverpool move to shut the door

TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract, a deal designed to fend off exactly this kind of interest.

Those talks are now being pushed towards a full, binding agreement, and Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Liverpool do not expect any late drama. The club want him tied down. The player, crucially, is on board.

“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha, and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season,” O’Rourke explained, underlining why Anfield feels like the right place for the winger’s next step.

The pathway has been laid out. Ngumoha likes what he sees. Liverpool believe his long-term future sits firmly on Merseyside, and there is optimism on both sides that the final details will be ironed out.

For Arsenal, who have already watched one left-sided target after another slip away, the signs are grimly familiar.

‘Rio is Liverpool’s future’

Fabrizio Romano has echoed that mood around Liverpool, reinforcing the message that the club have never seriously entertained the idea of letting Ngumoha go.

“In the summer, we had many rumours about Bayern Munich and more clubs, but the message from Liverpool was always the same: the player is not leaving, the player is not for sale and Liverpool trust Rio. Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano said.

Liverpool, he stressed, did nothing more than “appreciate” the outside interest. There were no talks, no negotiations, no softening of their stance. For a player widely regarded as one of the standout young talents in his position, that resolve speaks volumes.

Now Arsenal’s name has entered the frame. The logic is obvious. They replaced Leandro Trossard with Christos Tzolis, then watched Martinelli go without bringing in a like-for-like successor. The squad feels a winger light, and the recruitment team will always scan the market for an opening.

If an opportunity to move for Ngumoha ever truly emerges – in 2027, 2028 or beyond – Arsenal would be there. So would clubs from abroad. The interest will not disappear.

But right now, it has nowhere to go.

Contract talks set the tone

Romano confirmed that Liverpool are actively working on a new deal with Ngumoha. Conversations are ongoing, the structure is being thrashed out, and the club still need to hit the guarantees the player and his camp are seeking.

There is work left to do. There always is with a major contract for a rising star: salary, role, length, clauses, the balance on every single point.

Yet the direction of travel is clear. Liverpool want to keep him. Ngumoha is buying into the project. The market is watching, but shut out for the moment.

Arsenal will keep looking for an answer on the left. The question now is whether they can find one before Ngumoha grows into exactly the kind of winger they’ve been chasing – only in Liverpool red.
