JJ Gabriel Declines Manchester United Contract Amid Barcelona and Madrid Interest

Manchester United look to have lost one of the most talked‑about teenagers in Europe before he has even signed his first professional deal.

JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old forward widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in United’s academy, has informed the club he will not sign a new contract when he turns 16, with Barcelona and Real Madrid leading a heavyweight chase that also includes Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

After a turbulent few months around the youngster, the situation has crystallised. Via his family and his agent, Ali Barat, Gabriel has formally told United that his future lies away from Old Trafford once he reaches professional terms.

The stance is described as firm. United have tabled several proposals, but each approach has been met with the same response: there will be no new agreement when he turns 16. Inside the club, there is a growing acceptance that there is no realistic way back.

The shift is already visible on the pitch. In recent days Gabriel has stepped away from some of his commitments with United’s youth sides as he and his camp concentrate fully on mapping out his next move.

From those conversations, one early conclusion has emerged inside his camp: La Liga looks like the ideal next step. The belief is that Spain’s top flight, and specifically the environments at Barcelona and Real Madrid, offers the best pathway for him to grow and eventually break through at the very top level.

That does not close the door on Bayern or PSG. A particularly strong sporting and financial proposal from either could still bend the story in their direction. But the fight increasingly feels like a clásico played off the pitch.

Barça hold the edge – for now

Within that Spanish duel, Barcelona appear to hold a slight advantage.

People close to Gabriel acknowledge he has a soft spot for Barça. On social media he has been seen more than once in the club’s colours, showing off his close control and flair with the ball at his feet, images that have not gone unnoticed at the Camp Nou.

There is interest in Real Madrid too. Gabriel follows the club and several of its stars online, and the prestige of the Bernabéu and Madrid’s track record with young talents carry obvious weight in any discussion.

For the moment, nothing is signed and nothing is final. Negotiations remain open on all sides. Barcelona know Gabriel’s personal preference could tilt the balance in their favour, especially as they continue to sell a project built around youth and technical development.

Yet they are equally aware of the threat from the capital. If Real Madrid decide to push hard, they have the financial muscle to put a far more lucrative package on the table, one that could test the resolve of a teenager and his family.
