Real Madrid land in Germany looking a lot more like Real Madrid again.

José Mourinho has recovered the bulk of his squad for tomorrow’s friendly against Schalke, the final dress rehearsal before the new season, and the squad list tells its own story. Big names are back. New money steps into the light. Selection battles are suddenly very real.

Diomandé steps into the spotlight

At the centre of it all stands Yan Diomandé.

The Ivorian defender has been called up for the first time and is expected to make his debut in a Real Madrid shirt, a landmark moment given he is now the most expensive signing in the club’s history. Every touch will be scrutinised, every duel weighed against that price tag.

Schalke provides his first live examination: how quickly he reads his teammates, how confidently he steps into challenges, how boldly he joins attacks. Not everyone boards the plane, though.

Endrick stays in Madrid, placed on a tailored programme designed to protect him from injuries at this delicate stage of his adaptation. The coaching and medical staff have opted for caution rather than spectacle.

Aurélien Tchouaméni also misses out, sidelined by a severe thigh strain that rules him out of this last pre-season test. And the list of long-term absentees remains unchanged: Éder Militão, Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio are still out of contention.

Mourinho’s final rehearsal

This is not just another summer run-out. The Schalke match is Madrid’s last stop before their official opener against Espanyol on 22 August, and Mourinho plans to treat it accordingly.

He wants minutes in legs, yes, but also answers on the tactics board. The Portuguese coach is using this trip to refine the shape he trusts for the start of the campaign and to push the new arrivals deeper into his system.

The back line, in particular, feels like an open audition.

Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konaté have muscled their way into Mourinho’s thoughts with strong showings, and this game could be the moment he tests the defensive unit he is leaning towards for Espanyol. Konaté has emerged as a direct rival for the centre-back spot alongside Dean Huijsen, turning what once looked like a straightforward pairing into a genuine contest.

On the right flank, the duel is just as fierce. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries continue to scrap for the starting role, with Dumfries making a powerful case since his arrival. Every overlap, every recovery run, every cross in Gelsenkirchen will feed into Mourinho’s decision.

One match, officially just a friendly, now carries the weight of selection, status and expectation. By the time Madrid leave Germany, Mourinho will want more than a win.

He will want his team for Espanyol written clearly in his head.
