Newcastle United Intensify Scouting for Geny Catamo

Newcastle United are already working on January – and this time, the brief might stretch beyond simply “young with resale value.”

After a summer window built around potential, the club’s recruitment team has started to cast the net wider, and one name keeps coming back: Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.

Newcastle step up checks on Catamo

According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have intensified their scouting of the 25-year-old over recent weeks as they shape plans for the winter window. They are not alone.

“Newcastle United, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton are among the clubs to have checked on Catamo, while Aston Villa have also continued to monitor his situation,” Bailey reported.

Catamo has done his part to fuel the interest. The Mozambique international has opened the season in sharp form, with two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances for Sporting. For a player already known for his direct running and versatility across the frontline, that early return has only strengthened his case.

Sporting’s hard line and Sunderland’s failed push

Newcastle’s interest is not arriving in a vacuum. Clubs have been circling for months.

Bailey revealed that several sides made contact with Catamo’s camp in the summer and have kept tabs on him since. Sunderland went furthest, making him their primary target in the last window, only to run straight into Sporting’s wall.

The Portuguese club refused to negotiate and pointed every suitor to the same place: the €60 million (£51 million) release clause. Sunderland balked at the figure and walked away, but they have not dropped their interest.

Now, they face a very different field. Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa all provide fresh Premier League competition for a player whose profile is rising quickly.

Catamo open to England – but at what price?

One thing does tilt the equation slightly in England’s favour. Catamo is keen.

“We understand Catamo is more than open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League, with the winger attracted by the prospect of testing himself in England,” Bailey reported.

That willingness will encourage Newcastle and the rest of the chasing pack, but it does not change the central question: will Sporting soften their stance?

So far, there is no sign that Newcastle have submitted an offer or opened formal talks. Everything hinges on January. If Sporting stick rigidly to the €60 million release clause, any move becomes a statement signing. If they relax, the race could ignite quickly.

Newcastle must decide whether Catamo is the kind of wide option worth pushing the budget for at around £51 million – or whether that money should be aimed elsewhere in a squad that still has several moving parts.
