The 20-year-old joins the Portuguese giants in a deal reportedly worth an initial €15 million, with add-ons potentially pushing the fee to just over €18 million.

Bayern Munich will quietly celebrate this one as well. The German club, who first brought Irankunda to Europe, are said to be entitled to 40% of the overall package thanks to a sell-on clause inserted when he left Bavaria for Watford in 2025.

Both Adelaide United and Adelaide Croatia – the clubs that nurtured Irankunda before he crossed continents – are in line for a significant boost through a mix of sell-on clauses from his Bayern move and FIFA training compensation. For two clubs that invested in his development long before Europe took notice, it is a powerful vindication.

This latest transfer caps a breakout year. Irankunda became the youngest Australian to score at a men’s World Cup in June, striking in the Socceroos’ 2-0 win over Türkiye in North America. That milestone followed his first full season in England, where he hit nine goals in the Championship for Watford after making his move from Bayern permanent.

New Challenges at Sporting

Now comes a very different stage. At Sporting, Irankunda walks into an attack already stacked with contrasting threats: Greek striker Fotis Ioannidis, Colombian forward Luis Suárez, Mozambican winger Geny Catamo and Portugal international Pedro Gonçalves. It is a frontline built to hurt teams in different ways, and the Australian’s pace and directness add another sharp edge.

Whether that group stays intact is another question. Catamo, who started on the wing in Sporting’s 2-2 draw with Estrela da Amadora on the opening day of the Portuguese season, is the subject of strong reported interest from Sunderland, Brentford, Aston Villa and Everton. If he moves on, Irankunda’s path to minutes out wide could open even faster.

Before that, there could be another date in gold. The winger may next feature for Australia next month, with the Socceroos set to host Brazil in a pair of friendlies in Townsville and Brisbane. From suburban pitches in Adelaide to a looming Champions League campaign with Sporting, the trajectory is clear.
