Marli Salmon Withdraws from England Under-18 Squad Due to Injury

Arsenal prospect Marli Salmon has been forced to pull out of the England Under-18 squad after picking up an injury, halting his rapid rise just as it threatened to accelerate.

The 17-year-old defender had been riding the high of his first senior appearance of the season, coming off the bench in Arsenal’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday. That outing was meant to be the springboard into his first taste of Under-18 international football.

Instead, he stays at London Colney.

Salmon’s step up put on hold

Salmon, already capped four times at Under-17 level, had been named in Will Antwi’s Under-18 squad for a trio of friendlies against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea. It would have marked his debut at that age group and a significant marker in his development.

The call never comes now.
Not this time.

An injury has forced him to withdraw, with the exact problem yet to be disclosed. England adjust, Arsenal regroup, and the teenager’s next appearance will depend on how quickly he recovers.

Antwi has moved to fill the gap by calling up Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou, who has already experienced youth football with both Poland and England. Sambou steps in as Salmon steps back, a reminder of how crowded and competitive the pathway is at this level.

For Salmon, the focus turns to rehab with Arsenal’s medical staff. Provided the issue is not serious, he is expected to return for the club’s Under-21s in a Premier League 2 clash against Sunderland on October 10. That is, of course, unless Mikel Arteta decides his composure and versatility are needed again in the senior squad for the Premier League meeting with Leeds on the same day.

Two matches, one date. His recovery will decide which door, if any, opens.

Rice joins growing list of England withdrawals

Salmon’s withdrawal arrives against a wider backdrop of fitness management at Arsenal and with England.

On the same day, Declan Rice also pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad. In his case, the decision is understood to be driven by load management rather than a specific injury.

Rice has been pushed hard.
Fifty-five games for Arsenal last season.
Seven more at the World Cup.

This term, the 27-year-old has already started six of Arsenal’s eight matches, including all five Premier League fixtures. The numbers tell the story: Arsenal and England are treading carefully with one of their most important players.

There was another fitness concern too. Defender Piero Hincapie missed out on Ecuador’s latest squad amid doubts over his condition, underlining how early-season strain is being felt across clubs and continents.

For Arsenal, the picture is mixed. A senior linchpin like Rice is being carefully managed. A rising talent like Salmon is briefly halted. The margins at the top level are thin, and for a 17-year-old on the brink of an international breakthrough, one small setback can reshape the next few weeks.

The question now is simple: how quickly can Marli Salmon turn promise back into momentum?
