Marc Cucurella's Memorable Night at the Bernabeu

Marc Cucurella finally had his Bernabeu night. The result was right, the atmosphere electric, the Club World Cup trophy glinting under the lights. Yet even as he soaked it all in, the left-back admitted he is still chasing full fitness.

The Spaniard has not started either of Real Madrid’s opening two games of the new campaign, a clear sign of the physical gap he is trying to close after a stunted pre-season. He did not try to hide it.

“Step by step. It’s clear that we didn’t have much of a preseason, but little by little, I’m feeling better. We’re doing a great job. The season is long, and the coach knows how to manage the team very well. That’s one of his strengths,” he told the club’s official channels, underlining that this is a long-distance race, not a sprint.

For Cucurella, simply walking out at the Santiago Bernabeu in white felt like a milestone. The night carried the weight of years of work, of moves and setbacks, of the wait for a stage this big.

“A perfect night, you can’t ask for more. Showing the Club World Cup trophy to the fans was a very special moment. Then, during the match, we did a great job. We were up against a great team. They made things difficult for us, but the team delivered an excellent performance,” he said, still riding the adrenaline.

The emotion ran deeper than the competition or the scoreline. This was personal. For the first time, his family were in the stands to watch him as a Madrid player at the Bernabeu, a detail that turned a big night into something unforgettable.

“Very special. It was very emotional. A very important day, the first time my family was here at the stadium to see me. I’m very happy, and I hope there are more nights like this. I felt privileged. Not many receive this kind of love and get to showcase such an important trophy in this stadium. I’m very happy for the affection I’ve received and will keep working hard because this is just the beginning,” Cucurella reflected.

That sense of “just the beginning” defines his challenge now. He wants to move from emotional debut to established starter, to turn cameos and special occasions into routine league and Champions League nights as part of the first XI during the 2026-27 season.

On the pitch, though, the spotlight inevitably swung to Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman tore through the Real Sociedad defence with a ruthless hat-trick, the kind of performance that instantly reorders the hierarchy of a dressing room and a league.

The pressure on Sociedad built and broke under Mbappe’s finishing. Every run he made stretched the game, every touch near the box felt dangerous. Cucurella has seen enough already to understand what Madrid now possess.

“He is a decisive player, and it’s a privilege to have him on our side. I hope he continues scoring more goals. This won’t be his last hat-trick of the season. With him on fire, the team is much more dangerous, and I’m happy for him,” the left-back said.

Madrid walked away with a statement win, a trophy paraded, and their new superstar already in full glare. For Cucurella, the night was something else as well: a glimpse of what his future at the Bernabeu can look like, if his fitness catches up with his ambition.
