Manchester United Midfield Overhaul: Ederson and Mateus Fernandes on the Radar

Manchester United are preparing for a ruthless reset in midfield, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte heading for the exit and deals for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes moving into sharp focus.

The message from Old Trafford is clear: thank you for your service, but the engine room is getting rebuilt.

Casemiro out, Ugarte to follow

Casemiro, outstanding across this campaign but now 34, will leave on a free transfer after United opted not to renew his contract. His influence has been obvious, his experience invaluable, yet the decision underlines the club’s determination to inject younger legs and greater dynamism into the centre of the pitch.

Ugarte is next in line. Signed for £50.5 million and billed as a long-term anchor, he has not come close to justifying that fee. United are now preparing to cash in, accepting that the experiment has not worked and that his departure must help fund a new core.

Those calls strip away sentiment and open the door to a very different-looking midfield next season.

Top target lost, new plan takes shape

United had earmarked Elliot Anderson as a priority signing, only to see Manchester City move into position and leave their rivals facing disappointment. Missing out on Anderson has forced a recalibration rather than a retreat.

Attention has swung firmly to Atalanta’s Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, with both deals gathering pace.

Ederson is the closest. talkSPORT report that United are “closing in” on an agreement with Atalanta, with the fee expected to rise to around £43m. The Brazilian has already given the move the green light and is prepared to sign a five-year contract, a significant show of commitment from both player and club.

The structure is simple: secure Ederson, then push hard for Fernandes.

United lead the race for Mateus Fernandes

According to CaughtOffside, United now “lead the race” for Fernandes and have become the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. They have done more groundwork than any of their rivals and are positioned to move quickly.

They are not alone in their admiration. Arsenal are interested and see the Portuguese midfielder as a possible replacement for Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation, aware that his stock has risen sharply.

The edge for United lies not just in preparation, but in appeal. Fernandes, 21, is keen on the idea of lining up alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes and is eager to play Champions League football in United colours. That combination of personal ambition and stylistic fit gives United a powerful pitch.

Initial suggestions put his price as high as £80m, a figure that would have tested any suitor. CaughtOffside now claim West Ham’s relegation has shifted the landscape, with the midfielder available in the €50–60m range, roughly £43–52m. For a player of his age and upside, that bracket suddenly looks far more attainable.

Ederson first, but not the last?

Ederson’s move is expected to be completed before any agreement for Fernandes. Talks with Atalanta are already at an advanced stage, and the sense inside the deal is that only the final details remain.

Once Ederson is through the door, United intend to turn that momentum towards West Ham. Reports on Saturday indicated that a “serious” push for Fernandes will follow the Brazilian’s arrival, and both deals are described as edging closer.

The overhaul might not stop there. If finances stretch far enough, United are open to adding a third midfielder on top of Ederson and Fernandes. On May 20, the Daily Mail’s United correspondent, Chris Wheeler, revealed that a £20m move for a further backup option is under consideration, with Southampton’s Shea Charles on the list of targets.

From Casemiro’s farewell to Ederson’s expected arrival, from Ugarte’s likely sale to the chase for Mateus Fernandes, United are not tinkering at the edges. They are tearing out the old core and building a new one. The only question now is how quickly those new signings can turn a bold plan into a functioning, dominant midfield.
