Manchester City Set to Make Blockbuster Bid for Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City are preparing to smash their transfer record for the second time this summer, with an opening offer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez set to land before the window closes, according to BBC Sport.

Chelsea have put a minimum £120m price tag on the 25-year-old Argentina international. If City go anywhere near that figure, Fernandez would become the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history, behind only Alexander Isak’s £125m move to Liverpool.

For Enzo Maresca, this isn’t a luxury purchase. It’s the cornerstone of his rebuild.

Maresca’s midfield mission

City’s new manager has identified Fernandez as the player to knit together a midfield ripped apart in a single summer. Four established names have already gone: Tijjani Reijnders to Al-Qadsiah for £52m, Rodri to Barcelona for £65m, Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle for £52m, and Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid.

That is not evolution. That is a reset.

Maresca believes Fernandez can anchor the next version of City’s engine room, dictating tempo and providing the range of passing required to keep the club at the top of English and European football. Signing him would mean City eclipsing the £116m they have just paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, underlining the scale of the gamble and the urgency of the project.

Old ties, new tension

There is history here. Maresca and Fernandez maintained a close relationship even after the coach’s stormy Chelsea exit on New Year’s Day, months before he took charge at the Etihad Stadium in June. That bond now forms the emotional spine of City’s pursuit.

On the other side of the deal, the atmosphere has cooled. Tensions between Fernandez and Chelsea spiked after their Champions League elimination by PSG in March. The midfielder did not hide his frustration, a rare public crack in the relationship between a marquee signing and a club still trying to re-establish its identity.

Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023, explored a possible move to Real Madrid with his agent Javier Pastore. Madrid publicly distanced themselves from the idea, but the episode underlined the player’s willingness to consider a new chapter.

New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso held private talks with Fernandez in July. Alonso refused to reveal what was said, leaving only the outcome to speak for him: as of now, the midfielder remains a Chelsea player, but his future is anything but settled.

Chelsea’s biggest call since Hazard

If City formalise their interest with a bid close to Chelsea’s valuation, the London club face their most significant outgoing decision since Eden Hazard left for Real Madrid in 2019.

Selling Fernandez would bring in a huge fee and offer financial flexibility, yet it would also strip Alonso of one of his most technically gifted midfielders just as he tries to impose a new style and navigate a demanding run of league fixtures. Lose him now, and the tactical plan may need rewriting on the fly.

City, by contrast, are operating against the clock but with a clear objective. They want a marquee name, a statement signing to steady a squad that has lost its core and to send a message to rivals that their grip on domestic and European honours is not loosening.

The deadline is days away. The numbers are enormous. The relationships are complicated.
