Forest Eye Lift-Off as Coventry Struggles Continue

Nottingham Forest step into tonight’s clash with Coventry City sensing an opportunity. Mid-table in the Premier League, unbeaten in four league outings, and fresh from a statement win at Aston Villa, Oliver Glasner’s side can turn a solid start into something more serious.

Coventry arrive in a very different mood. Bottom of the table, goals drying up, confidence leaking away. Frank Lampard needs a performance, not just a result.

Forest’s form building under Glasner

Glasner’s Forest are beginning to look like a team that knows exactly what it is. Compact without the ball, sharp when it turns over, and increasingly ruthless in transition.

The numbers back it up. Two wins, two draws and a single defeat from their last five. The headline result came on 12 September: a 2-1 win away at Aston Villa, the kind of victory that stiffens belief in a dressing room.

That run also includes a wild 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a disciplined 0-0 against Tottenham Hotspur. The only real blemish in the league was a narrow 0-1 loss to Leeds United, who also knocked Forest out of the Carabao Cup.

Even so, Forest sit 11th and look upward rather than over their shoulder.

Glasner is expected to roll with a bold, front-foot XI:

• Matz Sels in goal;
• a back three of Ousmane Diomande, Murillo and Ola Aina;
• Daniel Munoz and Neco Williams as aggressive wing-backs;
• Xaver Schlager and James McAtee in midfield;
• Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White supporting Liam Delap up front.

There are problems, though. Nicolo Savona, Jair Cunha and Nikola Milenkovic are all sidelined through injury, trimming Forest’s options if the game becomes a grind.

Coventry reeling and short of answers

Coventry’s recent record is brutal reading: one win, four defeats from their last five in all competitions. Fourteen goals conceded, only three scored. That tells its own story.

The only bright spot came in the Carabao Cup, a 4-2 win away at Plymouth Argyle that briefly hinted at a spark. It didn’t last. Since then, the punishment has been relentless.

A 0-5 hammering by Brighton in the league. A 0-1 defeat to Manchester City that was respectable on paper but yielded no points. Another 0-1 reverse against Hull City. And in midweek, a 1-3 Carabao Cup loss to Aston Villa piled on more pressure.

Coventry sit 20th in the Premier League table, rooted to the bottom and searching for a foothold.

Lampard is expected to stick with a back four in front of Carl Rushworth. Bobby Thomas, Aurele Amenda, Ethan Pinnock and Milan van Ewijk form the defensive line, with little margin for error given recent scorelines.

He is also missing key figures. Haji Wright, Luke Woolfenden, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Josh Eccles are all out injured. Taiwo Awoniyi, on loan and a potential focal point in attack, serves a suspension. For a side already struggling to score, that absence cuts deep.

History leans Forest’s way – but Coventry have memories of an upset

These clubs have shared a curious recent history. The last time they met, in a pre-season friendly in July 2022, Coventry walked away 3-1 winners. That result will be one of Lampard’s few reference points for belief.

Competitive meetings tell a different tale. Across four Championship clashes from November 2020 to April 2022, Forest took three wins to Coventry’s one.

Forest won 2-1 at home in November 2020, then 2-1 away in February 2021. Coventry struck back with a 2-1 home victory in August 2021, only for Forest to respond with a 2-0 success at the City Ground in April 2022.

Across those five most recent encounters – four league, one friendly – Forest hold the edge with three wins to Coventry’s two.

A night that could set the tone

So the stage is clear. Forest, 11th and climbing, with a system starting to hum and a home crowd expecting a push towards the top half. Coventry, bottom and battered, trying to stem the bleeding and prove they belong at this level.

If Forest find early rhythm, this could become another long evening for Lampard’s side. If Coventry dig in and survive the first wave, doubt might creep into the City Ground.

One game in September will not define a season. But for Forest, it can accelerate one. For Coventry, it already feels like a line in the sand.
