Gasperini Aims for Equal Terms as Roma Face Inter

Gian Piero Gasperini is not hiding from the scale of the challenge. He knows who stands at the top of Italian football right now. And he wants Roma to stand next to them, not behind them.

On the eve of a marquee showdown with Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico, the Roma coach set out his ambition clearly: compete on equal terms with the reigning champions, the side he openly called the benchmark after their domestic dominance and European finals.

Inter, he admitted, still have more. More depth. More continuity. More proof on the table. But Roma, in his eyes, are closing the gap.

Gasperini pointed to the club’s progress and refused to label this as a title duel in October. For him, real Scudetto talk only starts after 20 matchdays, when the table stops lying and the season’s trends harden into reality.

A personal hoodoo

If Roma are wrestling with the league leaders, Gasperini is wrestling with his own history.

He walks into this game carrying ten straight defeats against Inter from his previous managerial spells. Ten. Across different squads, different eras, different versions of Inter. For Gasperini, this is what happens when you repeatedly clash with a dominant side. Negative streaks form. The trick is to break them.

Injury worries ease for Roma

Roma at least go into this test with their squad largely intact.

Manu Kone, Evan Ndicka and Wesley have shaken off minor knocks and seasonal flus and are fully available, a significant boost against the most relentless squad in the country. Even more encouraging, Lorenzo Pellegrini has rejoined full training over the last two weeks after a lengthy absence, restoring a key piece of Roma’s midfield structure and leadership.

Any lingering fatigue, Gasperini insisted, will be drowned out by the tension and adrenaline of a night like this. The occasion, he believes, will carry his players through whatever is left in their legs.

Refereeing storm? Gasperini looks past it

Around the fixture, the noise has swirled not just about tactics and form, but about the referee.

Davide Massa has been at the centre of recent controversies, yet Gasperini refused to fan the flames. He brushed aside the debate and backed the official to deliver a “perfect” performance, shutting down any attempt to turn the build-up into a refereeing trial.

For Roma’s coach, the focus stays on the pitch, where Inter’s threats are very real and very wide.

Flank battle key to stopping Inter

One of Gasperini’s biggest calls lies on the right flank. Young prospect Lulli is still under consideration for a starting role, a bold option in a match of this magnitude.

The coach underlined the tactical flexibility he has at his disposal with Nahuel Molina and Wesley. Both are right-footed, both can operate on either wing, and both give him different ways to mirror or disrupt Inter’s devastating transitions out wide.

Choosing the right combination on the flanks will be critical. Inter punish space on the outside better than anyone in Italy. Get that matchup wrong, and Roma could spend the night running towards their own goal.

Roma arrive with improved league form and a better position in the table, but the numbers that really sting are the ones against the league leaders: a lingering winless run they are desperate to erase.
