Liverpool's Struggles in Ismaïla Sarr Transfer Pursuit

Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit another wall, with Crystal Palace shutting the door on an approach for Ismaïla Sarr.

The Reds made their move for the Palace winger as the transfer window ticks towards its close, with reports claiming a bid of €58.4 million was tabled. Fabrizio Romano reported that offer, though the Athletic countered that no formal bid was actually lodged. What is clear is that Liverpool asked the question — and received a blunt answer. Sarr is not for sale.

Palace’s stance is nothing new. Galatasaray tried twice earlier in the summer to prise Sarr away and saw both offers rejected. The Turkish club have now stepped back, with little expectation of returning with a higher bid.

Liverpool have arrived at the same locked door from a different route. Andoni Iraola’s side had initially focused on Yankuba Minteh, only to walk away when Brighton’s demands soared. The Seagulls were said to be looking for around €90m, a figure that cooled Liverpool’s interest and pushed them toward Sarr.

A Complicated Summer on the Right

This has been a messy, stop-start summer for Liverpool in one key area of the pitch. Salah’s future and the need to plan beyond him have driven the club into a crowded, expensive market for right-sided forwards.

They have explored several options. Minteh was one. PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye has been heavily discussed internally. Now Sarr has become the latest name to be seriously pursued, only for Palace to stand firm.

It is not hard to see why they are resisting. At 28, Sarr is in his prime and battle-hardened in the Premier League, with 116 appearances to his name. He was outstanding last season as Palace went all the way in the Europa Conference League, scoring 21 goals in a campaign that inevitably drew attention from bigger clubs.

Liverpool’s recruitment team clearly see him as a ready-made, high-level option for the right flank, someone who could step into a demanding role without a long adaptation period. Palace, though, see a talisman they are not prepared to lose.

Barcola Talks Offer a Different Angle

While the Sarr pursuit stalls, Liverpool are working another angle in France. The club are in talks to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG, a player whose preferred position is on the left.

That interest underlines the broader reshaping of Liverpool’s attack. They are not just hunting a Salah replacement; they are trying to rebalance the entire front line, with flexibility and depth across both flanks.

For now, though, the right-wing conundrum remains unsolved. Palace have drawn a line over Sarr. Brighton’s price for Minteh sits sky-high. PSG hold Barcola.

Liverpool know the clock is ticking. The question is whether they find a breakthrough in time, or head into the season still searching for the next man to own that right touchline.
