Lazio Eye Fikayo Tomori for Defensive Reshuffle

Lazio are circling an unlikely target to anchor their back line: out-of-favor Milan center-back Fikayo Tomori.

According to Il Messaggero, via LaLazioSiamoNoi, the Biancocelesti have identified the English defender as a prime candidate to reshape Gennaro Gattuso’s defense this summer. It’s a move that would have sounded far-fetched not long ago. Now it feels like a live option.

Tomori pushed to the margins at Milan

Tomori’s stock at San Siro has fallen sharply. New Milan coach Ruben Amorim has effectively frozen the 28-year-old out of his plans after an underwhelming 2025/26 campaign.

The numbers say he was involved – 33 Serie A appearances – but the performances rarely convinced. Since arriving from Chelsea in 2021, Tomori has experienced both title-winning highs and error-strewn lows. Last season tilted too often toward the latter.

Milan have already moved on one piece in their defensive reshuffle, bringing in Mario Gila from Lazio. That deal has only underlined how open the Rossoneri are to further change at the back. Tomori, whose contract runs out at the end of next season, sits right at the center of that conversation.

Interest from the Premier League, once his most obvious escape route, has cooled. No bidding war, no queue at the door. For now, just uncertainty.

A swap that solves two problems?

That’s where Lazio step in. Working under tight financial constraints, they need to be creative. Tomori’s situation offers exactly that kind of opportunity.

Milan have their own headache on the left. Pervis Estupiñán struggled to convince in his first Serie A season, pushing the club to look for a new left-back. Lazio’s Nuno Tavares has emerged as a serious option for that role.

Put those pieces together and the outline of a deal appears: Tomori heading to Rome, Tavares going the other way, with cash added on top to balance the books. A player-plus-cash formula that keeps Lazio within budget and gives Milan a ready-made solution at full-back.

For Gattuso, Tomori would bring pace, experience in a high line, and a defender with Serie A know-how, all without Lazio committing to a huge fee up front. For Milan, Tavares would offer the attacking thrust from left-back they feel Estupiñán hasn’t consistently delivered.

Milan’s ticking clock

The real pressure sits on Milan’s side of the table. Keep Tomori now and they risk losing him for nothing in less than a year. Move him on this summer and they at least control the outcome.

That contract deadline changes the tone of every negotiation. It drags down the asking price. It makes compromise more likely. And it nudges a swap-style arrangement from “interesting idea” into the territory of a very realistic play.

Lazio need a defender. Milan need a left-back and clarity over Tomori’s future. The clock is running. The logic of a deal is hard to ignore.
