Jesse Bisiwu has barely unpacked in Barcelona, but he is already living inside one of the club’s biggest questions of the season.

Is he a first-teamer under Hansi Flick, or the next big bet for the reserves?

A fast-track arrival

The Belgian winger trained with the FC Barcelona first team for the first time on August 1, fresh from his €8.5 million move after months of negotiations with Club Brugge. Two weeks on, he has survived Flick’s first squad filter. That alone says plenty.

As the internationals returned and the usual preseason crowd of academy hopefuls thinned out, many youngsters were quietly sent back to the reserve side or told to wait on moves. Bisiwu stayed. Not as a guest, but as part of the group.

The club’s behaviour has been clear: media spotlight at his unveiling, immediate inclusion in the first-team squad list on the official website, and a place in Flick’s daily work. On paper, he is one of them.

On the pitch, the story is just beginning.

Nervous debut, flashes of something different

Bisiwu made his Barça debut in the friendly against Udinese, coming off the bench for around half an hour. The occasion got to him. The touches were rushed, the decisions not always clean. Still, there were hints — the change of pace, the way he carries the ball — of why some inside the club see echoes of Ousmane Dembele in his game.

Those around him have noticed. In these first weeks, teammates have seen in training that he is not just another academy winger pushed up for numbers. He has something. A special talent, yes, but still raw, still learning what it means to be decisive at elite level.

The staff’s notes from day one were blunt. He does not yet press with the relentlessness Flick demands. His finishing needs work, especially the precision of his shooting. The tools are there, the end product is not — yet.

Even so, expectations are high. He is expected to feature prominently again on Sunday against Basel in another preseason test, another chance to settle the nerves and show a little more of what he can do.

Flick’s project on the left

Tactically, Flick has been clear. So far, every serious look at Bisiwu has come on the left wing. That is where he feels most comfortable, even if he can operate on the right. It is also where the competition bites hardest.

Raphinha is there. Anthony Gordon is there. Two established names, two very different profiles, and an 18-year-old Belgian trying to carve out a space between them.

For Flick, that is part of the attraction. The German coach is investing time on the training ground to polish what the club considers one of its biggest young prospects in recent years. This is not a courtesy call to a new signing. It is a deliberate project.

Bisiwu, for his part, is not hiding his ambition. He wants a permanent place in the first-team squad, not a shuttle role between the senior side and the reserves. The staff believe he can be prepared for the top level. The question is not talent, but timing.

The season will decide whether this summer’s €8.5 million gamble becomes a fixture at Montjuïc — or spends his first year in Barcelona learning his trade one step below.
