Inter Milan Targets Federico Chiesa After Curtis Jones Transfer

Liverpool’s summer shuffle with Inter Milan may not be over yet.

Curtis Jones has already gone, completing his move to San Siro on Friday in a deal that could rise to £30 million. At 25, a homegrown midfielder leaves Anfield to restart his career in Serie A.

Inter, though, look ready to circle back for more.

Inter eye Chiesa after Jones deal

The Italian champions have set their sights on Federico Chiesa, who has never quite found his place on Merseyside.

Chiesa, 28, arrived at Liverpool from Juventus in 2024 for around £12.5m, a low-risk fee for a player of his pedigree but backed by a hefty reported wage of £150,000 per week. On paper, it looked like a steal. In reality, it has been a stop-start spell.

He can call himself a Premier League title winner. That medal is real. His impact, though, has been limited. Used mainly as a squad option, Chiesa has struggled to nail down a consistent role at Anfield and has not convinced new boss Andoni Iraola in pre-season.

Liverpool are open to a sale if their valuation is met. Inter sense an opportunity.

Luis Henrique out, Chiesa in?

Inter’s attacking reshuffle is already in motion. Brazilian forward Luis Henrique is expected to join Roma in a deal worth around €25m, a move that would leave Cristian Chivu needing a replacement in his forward line.

That is where Chiesa comes in.

Inter-focused journalist Fabio Bergomi has singled out the Liverpool winger as the likeliest candidate to fill that gap.

“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” Bergomi told his YouTube audience, before adding: “So I would narrow it down to Chiesa, because perhaps in the end they close Chiesa and he is plausible.”

The message is clear: if Luis Henrique heads to the capital, Inter want Chiesa ready to walk through the door.

Injuries, doubts and a stalled Liverpool spell

Chiesa’s Liverpool story never really caught fire.

Under Arne Slot last season, he managed only two Premier League starts and failed to make a compelling case in either. For a player who once terrorised defences in Serie A and shone for Italy at Euro 2020, it has been a stark comedown.

His absence from training in the build-up to Liverpool’s season opener against Newcastle only fuelled talk of an imminent exit. But that, it is understood, is down to yet another injury rather than any advanced transfer negotiations.

Fitness problems have stalked his career, and they remain a key question mark for any club weighing up a move.

Even so, the talent is not in doubt. Inter know exactly what kind of player they are targeting: a wide forward who can attack space, cut inside, and change games when fully fit.

Liverpool, for their part, will not stand in his way if the numbers are right. Wages off the books, a modest profit on the fee, and a cleaner attacking pecking order under Iraola all hold appeal.

Inter have already prised one player out of Anfield in Jones. The real intrigue now is whether they push ahead and turn this into a full Liverpool double, bringing a Euro 2020 winner back to Italy for a second act.
