Hartlepool Faces Double Injury Setback with Merrick and Kouogun Out

Hartlepool United’s early-season momentum has been checked by a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing up to three months on the sidelines.

Manager Kevin Clark confirmed the blows after Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, was forced off in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking with a thigh problem. The 21-year-old had to be replaced shortly after the half-hour mark and has since returned to his parent club for treatment.

“Max obviously went straight back down to Chelsea with it being his parent club and the medical facilities they have there,” Clark told BBC Radio Tees. “He’s had a scan.

“We spoke with their medical team – not good news, but probably what we expected. He’s got a thigh tear, so he’ll be out for six weeks.”

Chelsea’s medical department will now oversee the bulk of Merrick’s rehab, with Hartlepool in daily contact as they monitor his progress.

“You can imagine what a top elite European club has in terms of facilities and the attention that they can have in terms of the amount of medical staff that they have as well,” Clark said. “He’ll get the very best of attention there and then when he gets close to that return, he’ll come back up with us. We’re keeping in touch with him every day, making sure that everything’s okay.”

Kouogun facing longer spell out

If Merrick’s absence stings, the news on Kouogun cuts even deeper.

The defender damaged ankle ligaments after landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August, and scans have confirmed a lengthy lay-off.

“Following on from that, we’ve had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he’s got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months,” Clark said.

The club will now consult a specialist to determine whether the 26-year-old requires surgery.

“We’re going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery, if that would be the case, that would take up to three months,” Clark added. “So that’s a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”

Kouogun’s physical presence and leadership at the back have been central to Hartlepool’s defensive structure. Losing that for potentially a quarter of the season leaves a sizeable hole.

Fisher steps up, Smith moves to No. 2

Merrick’s injury has already reshaped the goalkeeping pecking order. Summer signing Nathan Fisher came off the bench against Woking and is now in line to start Friday night’s fixture against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST).

The 21-year-old, brought in as cover, suddenly finds himself under the spotlight as Hartlepool’s first choice.

His promotion means player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith is expected to step up as the club’s second-choice keeper while Merrick recovers.

Clark weighing up market move

Behind the scenes, Hartlepool are already exploring whether they need to act.

Clark is set for talks with head of football operations Chris Maxwell of club advisors Bromby & Partners to assess the possibility of bringing in another goalkeeper to cover Merrick’s absence and protect against further disruption.

Two key players out. A young keeper thrust into the starting role. A back line shorn of one of its mainstays. Hartlepool’s response to this stretch could say plenty about where their season is really heading.
