Harry Kane Leads English Charge for 2026 Ballon d'Or

Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named on a star-studded shortlist that also includes Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

The Bayern Munich striker has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite for the award, which will be handed out on 26 October at the London Palladium – the first time the ceremony has ever been staged in the English capital.

Kane heads English trio in Ballon d’Or race

Kane’s numbers are impossible to ignore. Seventy-three goals in 65 games for club and country, another Bundesliga title in his first season in Germany, and the armband as he led England to World Cup bronze. It is the kind of campaign that usually ends with a golden trophy in the hands of its main protagonist.

The 33-year-old faces a stacked field. Holder Ousmane Dembele is back in the mix, joined by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe among the leading contenders to deny Kane. No Englishman has lifted the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. That drought now comes under serious threat on home soil.

Bellingham and Rice, the twin pillars of England’s midfield, also take their place on the 30-man list. Rice is one of several Premier League-based nominees, with Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba all in the running for the prize that will be decided under the lights in London.

Lionel Messi’s name appears again, a familiar presence on any Ballon d’Or sheet. Cristiano Ronaldo’s does not. The Portugal great misses out this time, a stark marker of how sharply the landscape has shifted.

Yamal headlines young talent field

If Kane represents the established elite, Lamine Yamal embodies the next wave. The teenager fronts the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist, underlining his rapid rise onto the global stage.

He is joined by Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi, while Manchester City’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Aston Villa’s recent recruit Johan Manzambi are also recognised. Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman features on the women’s young talent list, a nod to the depth of emerging quality across the game.

Premier League flavour in coaching and club honours

The Premier League’s imprint stretches well beyond the players. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are both nominated for Men’s Coach of the Year. They go up against Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, as well as Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique.

Arteta’s Arsenal are also in contention for Men’s Club of the Year, reflecting their resurgence at the top end of European football.

Vozinha among goalkeeping elite

In the goalkeeping category, Cape Verde’s World Cup hero Vozinha earns a place on the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year shortlist. His exploits on the biggest stage have propelled him into a group that includes Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez, now of Chelsea.

London takes centre stage on landmark anniversary

This edition marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and co-organised with UEFA since 2024. To mark the milestone, the ceremony has moved from its traditional Paris home to London, a city chosen in tribute to the very first winner, England and Blackpool legend Stanley Matthews.

Seventy years on from Matthews’ triumph, England will host the game’s most glamorous individual prize again – and this time, with Kane, Bellingham and Rice in the frame, the hosts may yet reclaim the crown that started it all.
