Harry Kane Focuses on Trophies with Bayern Munich

Harry Kane brushed aside talk of the Ballon d'Or after lifting yet another trophy with Bayern Munich, insisting his priorities lie firmly with adding more silverware in Germany.

The England captain helped Bayern edge Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the German Super Cup, the latest addition to a rapidly expanding honours list. Since arriving in Munich, Kane has collected the Golden Boot, the Bundesliga title, the German Cup and now the Super Cup, on top of the six goals he scored at the World Cup as England finished third.

It is the kind of résumé that usually propels a player into the Ballon d'Or conversation. At Bayern, though, that award has been absent for decades; no player from the club has claimed it since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Kane was asked about changing that when speaking to Marca, but he quickly shifted the spotlight.

"A new season has begun, and it is nice to start it by winning a cup like the Super Cup. It is true that last season was the best of my career, but I am now focused on the new season," he said, swerving any personal campaign.

The message was clear: collective targets first.

"We have to fight for all the titles again, including the Champions League," he added. "The Super Cup is the first of four titles we will fight for, and I hope we continue on this path."

On the night, Kane stayed on the pitch from first whistle to last but never quite hit his usual devastating level. He did not score. He did not need to. The bigger picture is brutal reading for defenders across Europe: 146 goals in 148 appearances for Bayern, and he is only now heading into his fourth season at the club.

That kind of consistency usually fuels speculation about long-term plans and contract wrangles. Kane, though, sounded completely at ease about his situation.

"We will talk this week and next week. We will have an open discussion, and we are not in a hurry or feeling panicked," he said.

Trophies in hand, goals flowing, pressure cooled. The Ballon d'Or debate will rage on without him fanning the flames, but if Bayern keep stacking titles, how long can his name really be kept out of it?
