Ebbsfleet United Faces Expulsion from National League

Ebbsfleet United are staring at the prospect of being kicked out of the National League after their suspension from competition was extended, plunging the club’s future into deeper uncertainty.

The Kent side had already seen their opening three National League South fixtures called off earlier this month because of ongoing financial problems. Hopes of a quick resolution have now faded.

On Wednesday, the National League confirmed that its compliance and licensing committee had reviewed the situation and found “no significant change” in the club’s position. The tone of the league’s statement left little room for comfort.

“The club has been given time and opportunity to demonstrate compliance with the league's rules and regulations, but matters cannot continue as has been the case,” the statement read.

The league made it clear that the full range of disciplinary options is on the table. That includes the most severe: expulsion.

“The range of actions under rules and regulations include the potential for expulsion from the National League. The club is aware that such action is an option, and that it is entirely a matter for the club to satisfy the committee under the rules and regulations, and to remove such as an outcome.”

At the heart of the crisis is Ebbsfleet’s debt to HM Revenue and Customs. A winding-up petition remains active, and with it, serious doubt over whether the club has the financial strength to complete the season at all.

The extended suspension means more disruption to their campaign before a ball has even been kicked. The away trip to Farnborough Town on 29 August is off. So is the home match against Horsham two days later. The fixture list is beginning to fray.

There is, for now, one final deadline. Ebbsfleet have been given until 5pm on 1 September to submit any further information to the National League. Only then will the committee sit again and decide whether this is a temporary crisis – or the end of the road.
