Cuca Weighs Neymar's Availability on Synthetic Turf Debate
Santos head coach Cuca has made it clear: any decision on Neymar’s availability will not be his alone, especially with Allianz Parque’s synthetic pitch looming over the conversation.
The coach, speaking to ESPN Brazil, underlined that the call will be collective, and careful. "I will talk to him and we will make our decisions. With him and the entire squad. We'll determine what is best to do," Cuca said, framing Neymar not as an untouchable star, but as part of a wider technical and medical equation.
The surface, though, is the real villain in this story.
Neymar has long bristled at the idea of playing on artificial turf. His frustration sharpened after he aggravated an ankle problem against Atletico Mineiro last year, an injury he directly linked to the synthetic pitch. He didn’t sugarcoat it on social media: "It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***."
That anger has not cooled.
Asked in the mixed zone about the prospect of featuring at Palmeiras’ Allianz Parque, the forward cut off the speculation with a mix of irritation and realism. "Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday. I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf]," he replied, pushing the conversation back to the immediate fixture and refusing to commit.
His stance on Allianz Parque is already well documented, and it hasn’t softened with time. "Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible. Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch," Neymar has previously said.
So the dilemma is clear.
On one side, Cuca’s need for his talisman in a key away match. On the other, a player who openly despises the very ground he’d be asked to perform on, with a history of ankle trouble to back his concerns.
The next conversation between coach, medical staff, and star forward will not just decide a lineup. It will test how far Santos are willing to push their main attraction on a surface he simply does not trust.
