Crystal Palace Eyes Pierre Sage as Iraola Approaches Liverpool Talks

Crystal Palace’s search for a new head coach has taken a sharp turn, with Lens manager Pierre Sage now moving into focus as the club braces for disappointment in its pursuit of Andoni Iraola.

Sage, one of the rising coaching figures in European football, is expected to hold talks with Palace in the early part of this week. The 47-year-old has built a growing reputation on the continent, and those close to the situation say he is open to the idea of moving to south London.

Palace’s interest in Sage is not new. BBC Sport first reported the club’s admiration for the Lens boss on 8 May, but at that stage chairman Steve Parish and the hierarchy were still locked onto their preferred candidate: Iraola of Bournemouth.

That plan is now slipping away.

Iraola, fresh from winning the Conference League, had been the clear first choice to replace Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park. Palace made a firm proposal, confident they could tempt him into leading the next phase of the club’s project.

Then the landscape shifted.

Iraola is now set to begin formal talks with Liverpool in the coming days, with the Anfield club moving quickly after sacking Arne Slot on Saturday. As Liverpool circle, Palace know the odds of landing their original target are lengthening by the hour.

So the search widens.

Parish and his board are determined not to rush into a decision. The club is examining a number of options, weighing profiles, philosophies and the scale of the rebuild required after Glasner’s departure. Sage sits prominently on that list, his work at Lens catching the eye of recruitment teams across Europe.

For Palace, the next few days will be crucial. Talks with Sage are expected shortly, and while the club keeps other possibilities in play, the Frenchman suddenly has a clear opening to stake his claim for the Premier League job.
