Assim Madibo Receives Five-Match Suspension for Serious Foul Play

Assim Madibo has been hit with a five‑match suspension after the tackle that left Canada midfielder Ismael Kone with a broken leg at the FIFA World Cup.

The challenge, which came in the 54th minute of Qatar’s 6-0 defeat to Canada last week, brought a straight red card and immediate concern for Kone, who was stretchered off and has since undergone surgery. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has now classified the incident as “serious foul play,” handing down a ban that will rule Madibo out for the remainder of the group stage and beyond, should Qatar advance.

Madibo retains the right to appeal through the FIFA Appeal Committee, but the punishment underlines how severely the governing body viewed the tackle.

Away from the disciplinary paperwork, the story has taken on a more human edge. In the days after Kone’s operation, Madibo visited the Canada midfielder in hospital, a gesture that cut through the noise of a heavy scoreline and a brutal injury.

“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field," the Qatar Football Federation said in a statement. “We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch."

Born in Khartoum and capped 53 times by Qatar, the 29-year-old has long been one of the side’s more seasoned figures. His absence now leaves a sizeable gap in the heart of Qatar’s midfield at a critical moment.

Qatar close out their group stage campaign on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, still alive in the hunt for a place in the knockout rounds. They must win, and they must do it without one of their most experienced men.
