Arsenal Targets Kone Amid FFP Pressure

Arsenal have stepped into a transfer gap that Paris Saint-Germain left wide open – and they are moving fast.

The north London club are in advanced talks to sign highly rated France international Kone, having reached a broad understanding with the midfielder’s camp over a move to the Emirates. The breakthrough comes after a curious twist in his summer plans.

Kone had initially set his sights on a lucrative switch to PSG and turned down interest from Atletico Madrid in expectation that the French champions would eventually make their move. They never did. With no formal offer from Paris and the window beginning to take shape, Arsenal sensed hesitation and pounced.

The timing could hardly be more delicate for his Serie A club. They are under heavy pressure to cash in before June 30 to comply with strict Financial Fair Play rules. Internally, they had planted a firm €50 million price tag on a player who has flourished under Gian Piero Gasperini, becoming a cornerstone of their high-intensity midfield.

That stance is softening. Faced with the need to balance the books before the end-of-month deadline, recruitment insiders now believe a deal in the region of €45 million could be enough to get the green light. For a club squeezed by FFP, the margin between those figures suddenly looks like room to breathe.

Arteta’s tactical puzzle

Mikel Arteta has long searched for a way to ease the load on Declan Rice. Kone is viewed as the answer.

At 25, the Frenchman brings power and verticality in possession, a midfielder who can take the ball on the half-turn and drive it forward at speed. His ability to circulate play quickly through the lines would add a sharper edge to Arsenal’s midfield, turning slow domination into sudden penetration.

Crucially, he offers something different to Martin Zubimendi, another long-standing target. Zubimendi’s more measured, slower tempo has increasingly been judged an awkward fit for Arteta’s fluid, high-tempo structure. Kone, by contrast, fits the idea of an engine room that can both protect and accelerate.

The plan is clear: free Rice from some of the deepest defensive duties, give him license to step higher, and let Kone handle more of the dirty work and the first phase of transition. If Arsenal get this right, they do not just add a player; they reshape the balance of their midfield.

World stage, ticking deadline

For now, Kone’s attention shifts to the international stage. He will join up with France as they launch their World Cup campaign, opening with a demanding fixture against Senegal. It is the kind of game that can harden a player’s reputation or catapult it to another level.

Behind the scenes, though, the transfer machinery will not stop. His representatives are pushing to drive the move through quickly, aware that the Italian club’s financial deadline at the end of the month is both a threat and an opportunity. Miss it, and the selling club may try to dig in. Hit it, and Arsenal could land a marquee signing on terms shaped by FFP pressure.

The next step lies in London. Arsenal now have to decide how and when to lodge their official opening bid, structuring the offer carefully to satisfy both the immediate financial demands and the longer-term valuation. Get that timing right, and Kone could be walking into the Emirates as the midfielder who finally lets Arteta unlock the full range of Declan Rice.
