Arsenal Ready to Pounce as Liverpool's Barcola Chase Stalls

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has reached a dangerous pause – and Arsenal are circling.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger has been Liverpool’s priority target for weeks. Personal terms are understood to be agreed, the player is keen on Anfield, and the framework of the move has been sketched out. One crucial element is still missing: agreement with PSG on the fee.

That delay has opened the door.

Liverpool–PSG deadlock

French journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported last week that all parties involved expected a deal to be struck, clearing the way for the 23-year-old to join Liverpool. The mood then was optimistic.

The numbers have since become the problem.

Liverpool value Barcola at around £120m. PSG, fresh from another dominant domestic campaign and under no pressure to sell cheaply, are holding out for £130m up front and a further £15m in potential add-ons. The gap is sizeable, and for now, neither side has blinked.

Into that uncertainty steps a familiar rival.

Arsenal back in the frame

CaughtOffside report that Arsenal are ready to re-enter the race if talks between Liverpool and PSG continue to stall. The Gunners are being kept abreast of the situation and, crucially, the France international is said to be open to a move to north London despite having already indicated his approval of a switch to Merseyside.

One source summed up the current state of play: “Liverpool and PSG still have no agreement on Barcola; there’s a significant gap in valuation. Arsenal haven’t completely gone away and could aggressively enter the conversation again if it becomes clear this deal is really stalling.”

The warning is clear. This is no longer a one-horse race.

A test of Liverpool’s resolve

Right now, Liverpool remain Barcola’s preferred destination. That matters. But preference only counts for so much when negotiations drag and another elite Premier League club is prepared to test the waters.

Liverpool’s hierarchy are wary of overpaying. They have set a ceiling and, historically, have been disciplined when selling clubs push beyond it. Yet the stakes here are obvious. If the difference between signing Barcola and watching him walk into a direct rival’s dressing room is £10m, the question becomes brutal in its simplicity: is that a risk they are really prepared to take?

On the pitch, the need is tangible. Andoni Iraola goes into the Premier League opener against Newcastle with Federico Chiesa as his only natural right winger. Barcola is predominantly a left-sided forward, but his versatility across the front line and his track record at the highest level make him an obvious fit for an attack that needs depth and variety.

Time running out

Barcola’s situation in Paris underlines the urgency. The 23-year-old has been frozen out at PSG while his future is decided, a limbo that helps nobody. For Liverpool, it should be a signal. Sporting director Richard Hughes has an opportunity to construct a proposal that tests PSG’s resolve and gives the player the clarity he needs.
