Youri Tielemans Set to Make Manchester United Debut Against PSG

Manchester United will hand Youri Tielemans his first taste of life in red this weekend – but they will have to face the Champions League holders without two key pillars of Michael Carrick’s plans.

Tielemans era begins

The Belgian midfielder has barely had time to unpack at Carrington. Fresh from Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final run in North America and a short holiday, Tielemans joined training only last week. Now he is on the plane to Gothenburg and is expected to make his debut against Paris Saint-Germain at the Nya Ullevi Stadium.

United pushed through a £35million deal with Aston Villa last month, tying the former Leicester, Monaco and Anderlecht playmaker to a five-year contract until 2031. Carrick resisted the temptation to throw him straight in during the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm’s Snapdragon Cup, but the stage against the back-to-back European champions is a different kind of platform.

This is exactly the type of fixture United signed him for: tempo, control, personality in midfield. Carrick’s 22-man travelling squad underlines that.

Fernandes back, but key absentees bite

Bruno Fernandes is also ready to rejoin the action. The captain has reported back after his own post-World Cup break and is set to feature in Sweden, as is Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Yet just as the squad starts to look close to full strength, the fine print tells a different story.

Cunha will not be involved against PSG despite returning to the fold this week. First-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens is also out of contention. Both will stay at Carrington to “fully recover from non-related minor illnesses”, with United expecting them to rejoin the group during next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

The timing is awkward. Lammens’ absence, combined with a reshaped goalkeeping department, leaves Carrick light in a crucial area.

Goalkeeping reshuffle

With Lammens sidelined, new signing Karl Darlow unavailable and Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek departing for Celta Vigo and Middlesbrough respectively, United’s depth chart in goal looks very different.

Veteran Tom Heaton will start as the senior figure, backed up by Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath. Heath steps in for Bayindir in the touring squad, a rapid elevation for a youngster now rubbing shoulders with a core preparing for a new Premier League campaign.

It is a reminder of how quickly a pre-season plan can twist. One month, a packed goalkeeping stable; the next, a makeshift trio heading into a glamour tie with Europe’s benchmark club.

Injuries, holidays and a thin attack

The problems are not confined to goal. Striker Benjamin Sesko remains out with a shin injury that has lingered since last season, depriving Carrick of a focal point in attack. At the back, Matthijs de Ligt is still not ready to return from a long-term back issue.

Several heavyweights are yet to report at all. Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez remain on holiday after their World Cup exertions and will only link up with United when the squad moves to Ireland.

The blend of absentees and latecomers has forced Carrick to lean into youth. That policy paid off in Stockholm, where a second-half brace from Bryan Mbeumo secured a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid and handed 15-year-old JJ Gabriel a senior debut from the bench.

Gabriel, though, is not involved this weekend. Nor are fellow youngsters Jim Thwaites, Jaydan Kamason and Ethan Williams, all of whom drop out of the group for Gothenburg.

Young faces, big stage

Several academy prospects do keep their spots. Defenders Harry Amass and Dan Armer, midfielders Jack and Tyler Fletcher, and forward Shea Lacey all travel. Heath’s promotion, along with the continued presence of Joshua Zirkzee – still heavily linked with a summer exit – adds another layer of intrigue to Carrick’s attacking options.

The trip to Sweden is only one stop on a carefully plotted summer. After the clash with PSG, United head to a training camp in the Republic of Ireland, then face rivals Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12. The pre-season schedule wraps up against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 15.

Then comes the real test.

On August 22, Carrick begins his first Premier League season as permanent manager with a tricky opener away to Championship play-off winners Hull. The momentum, the chemistry between Tielemans and Fernandes, the fitness of key players like Cunha and Lammens – all of it will feed into that night.

For now, though, the focus is sharp and simple: a new signing’s debut, a captain’s return, and a meeting with Europe’s champions that will reveal exactly how far this evolving United side has come – and how far it still has to go.
