Premier League Gameweek 5: Team News Insights

Fourteen managers stepped up on Friday for the final wave of Premier League Gameweek 5 press conferences, with Mikel Arteta, Fabian Hürzeler and Fulham’s staff offering the clearest clues on who’s in and who’s out this weekend.

The headlines? Arsenal’s defensive worries may be easing, Brighton’s lengthy injury list still bites but with one or two timely boosts, and Fulham are forced into change at the back.

Arsenal: Defensive Relief for Arteta

Mikel Arteta cut a relaxed figure as he spoke about his squad, strongly hinting that Ben White has dodged any serious problem after that apparent groin issue in the win over Sunderland.

“They are all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so we are really positive about everybody,” he said when asked specifically about White’s fitness.

The reassurance didn’t stop there. Arteta suggested that Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber are also on course to return after missing the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town. Timber’s absence then had been explained as a simple case of game-time management.

“Yeah, we have another session, they are all willing to be part of it, and we have another session to try to make sure that they are fit,” Arteta added, confirming that Hincapie, Mosquera and Timber were included in that optimistic “all good” update.

One key absentee remains: William Saliba is still out with a back issue, so any defensive reshuffle will have to be built without him.

Arteta also used the press conference to underline just how impressed he has been with Ezri Konsa since his arrival.

“I heard some great things about Ezri before he joined and when you have him daily you just realise the magnitude of the player that we signed, not only the player but the person, the way he presents himself, the way he’s able to connect with people immediately,” he said.

He highlighted Konsa’s instant rapport with “Big Gabi”, describing the pair’s off-pitch chemistry as a foundation for a crucial on-field partnership.

“When you see those two in the corridors talking the way they interact with each other, it seems like they’ve been here for a long, long, long time together, which is great because that’s a partnership that in my opinion is extremely important on the field and then his attributes, the quality that he delivers to the team is something that really makes us better.”

Arteta was also quizzed on Eberechi Eze’s role from the left, a position he believes brings out the best in the attacker.

“He’s always played there in his career, that’s where all his biggest moments in his career and the highlights of his career have come and I think it’s a place that he feels very, very, very comfortable,” Arteta said.

He stressed that selection on that flank, particularly between Eze and Christos Tzolis, will hinge on form, opposition and the dynamics within that unit.

“In form, in the opponent, in the relationship that we have within that unit, there are a lot of factors [in deciding who starts between Eze and Christos Tzolis on the left].”

Brighton: Azeez Waits, Vuskovic Ready, Dunk Back

At Brighton, Fabian Hürzeler confirmed that new signing Femi Azeez will have to wait for his debut. The hamstring issue that has delayed his start will keep him out until after the international break.

“I think that the best thing for Femi is that he uses this [international break] to get back on his highest physical level and then get used to our style of play. Then, we will try to work with him individually and hopefully integrate him back into the team, then definitely after the international break, he will be on a top level and we can use him in games,” Hürzeler explained.

Azeez joins a sizeable injury list: Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Zadok Yohanna are all still out.

There is better news elsewhere. Jaouen Hadjam is “able to play” after a midweek knock, while Luka Vuskovic has shaken off the cramp that forced him off in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.

“He’s young, he will recover fast. He definitely will be an option for tomorrow,” said Hürzeler of Vuskovic, a line that will please Brighton fans after his impressive early showings.

Lewis Dunk, rested for the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, is available again and should restore experience and authority to the back line. Georginio Rutter also made his return from injury as a substitute in that cup game, adding another attacking option as Brighton juggle league and cup demands.

Fulham: Tete Ruled Out, Cairney Still Missing

At Fulham, there is no such flexibility at right-back. Kenny Tete has been ruled out as he follows concussion protocol after a head injury. He will not feature in Gameweek 5.

Tom Cairney remains sidelined with a knee problem, leaving Fulham short of one of their most composed midfield options.

With a reshuffle needed in defence and creativity missing in midfield, Fulham head into the weekend forced to adapt. Arsenal and Brighton, by contrast, walk in with the sense that bodies are returning and options are opening up just as the season begins to gather pace.
