West Ham United Signs Joel Piroe on Loan from Leeds United

West Ham United have moved to strengthen their attack with the signing of Joel Piroe from Leeds United on a season-long loan, complete with an obligation to buy in the summer of 2027.

The deal brings a proven Championship finisher to east London. Piroe, 27, has racked up 73 goals in England’s second tier across four seasons, first exploding at Swansea City before continuing his form at Leeds. He finished as Leeds’ top scorer in the 2024-25 campaign, driving their title-winning push and underlining his reputation as one of the division’s most reliable forwards.

The step up last season, though, was brutal. Piroe failed to score in 16 Premier League appearances, a stark contrast to his output in the Championship and a reminder of the gap between the two levels. West Ham are effectively betting that his prolific instincts have not gone anywhere – they just need the right stage.

"I think it's a good opportunity for me to show what I've learned and how I've grown as a football player over the years," Piroe told West Ham’s website, setting out his intent as he starts a new chapter in London.

Born in the Netherlands and now a Suriname international, Piroe came through at PSV Eindhoven and sharpened his game during a loan spell at Sparta Rotterdam before crossing the Channel. It was in England’s second tier that he truly found his range, evolving into a forward who can finish from distance, operate between the lines and carry a promotion chase on his shoulders.

West Ham have kept the finer details under wraps. The club have not disclosed the fee agreed for the 2027 permanent move, nor the length of Piroe’s proposed contract once the obligation to buy is triggered.

What is clear is the scale of the rebuild. Piroe becomes West Ham’s fifth permanent addition of the summer window, joining Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, Israel winger Manor Solomon and Belgium midfielder Arne Engels. It is a spine being rebuilt piece by piece.
