Sage Confirms Henderson and Mateta Will Miss International Break

Sage has confirmed that Dean Henderson and Jean-Philippe Mateta will not feature again before the upcoming international break, with the medical picture still far from clear.

"Henderson's situation is more certain than Mateta's situation. We will have to wait on both of them," he said, underlining the uncertainty over the pair. "I'll be able to give a better answer in two weeks. I also want a quick answer but I cannot give anything as yet."

For now, both remain sidelined, with the manager resigned to working without two key figures for at least a fortnight.

Doucoure left out of Europe

Cheick Doucoure’s omission from the squad for Thursday’s Europa League opener against Lech Poznan raised eyebrows, but Sage insisted there was a simple explanation: paperwork, not performance.

"He just isn't in the European squad list," he explained. "We have a little problem with that because we don't have too many players in his position currently in training, with four players out injured off our list.

"It wasn't easy to make the choices, but I had to and we can maybe change the list in January if we qualify for the knockouts. He can play in the Premier League."

Four goals, four scorers, one clean sheet

On the pitch, the night against Poznan brought exactly what Sage has been demanding: variety in attack and discipline at the back.

"I feel a lot of satisfaction because we scored four goals in four different ways through four different players," he said. "We also got a clean sheet, which is very important for us as we worked a lot on that after our last game."

The response to previous defensive work was clear. So was the message: this is the template.

Confidence growing with options returning

Asked whether belief is starting to build inside the dressing room, Sage pointed to the combination of results, structure and returning bodies.

"It is better because the players are aware of the win last time out, of how to score and how to defend, of lots of players coming back into the fold," he said.

Then he leaned on something more subtle than just form.

"Maybe the confidence is sometimes in the diversity of options, especially as it gave us other ways to win."

Sarr booed on return but backed by Sage

Ismaila Sarr stepped back onto the pitch on Thursday after a long injury lay-off and was met with a mixed reaction, with boos heard from sections of the Selhurst Park crowd. Sage moved quickly to defend the forward and to remind supporters of his value.

"I know the fans love him and I think he deserves to be loved the way he is," he insisted. "It is always difficult to come back after a long injury, but the most important thing for us was putting him on the pitch and giving him his first minutes.

"He will get better and better with more time out there. He can maybe start, but I don't think he can play the full match."

The coach understands why some fans reacted the way they did, given the expectation that Sarr would leave, but believes that chapter should now close.

"It is normal because everybody thought he would leave. Now he has made his comeback, I would like to think everybody is happy to see him on the pitch. We should all enjoy his goals and our wins with him."

Canvot handed route back

Jaydee Canvot also found himself back in the matchday squad after being left out entirely for last weekend’s game against Ipswich. Sage framed the decision as part lesson, part opportunity.

"He gave a good impression in preparation for this game," he said. "He understood why I left him out and what I expect from him. He is a really good player."

Sage then drew on his experience with emerging talents.

"I've managed some young talents in my career and I know sometimes they need this kind of encouragement. They have to realise it isn't sufficient to just be good, you have to be very good."

With key injuries, a reshaped European squad and big personalities under the spotlight, Sage has made it clear: places will be earned, not gifted, and the next two weeks could decide who leads the charge after the break.
