Manchester United Predicted XI vs Fulham: Carrick's Tactical Response

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick didn’t name his team for Fulham away, but he didn’t need to. The clues were all over his Friday press conference.

United travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday (16:30 UK time) under real pressure after a bruising week. Beaten by a 10-man Manchester City at Old Trafford, then dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton despite racing into a two-goal lead, they head south knowing this feels like a line-in-the-sand fixture before the international break.

Carrick has brushed off what he called “ridiculous” talk about his job being under threat, yet the mood around Carrington is clear enough: this one matters.

Shaw and Baleba racing the clock

The biggest selection questions sit around Luke Shaw and Carlos Baleba. Carrick confirmed both are in contention but short of full fitness.

“A chance for both of them. Not totally 100% on either,” he said, adding Shaw’s issue is “really short-term” and that they are simply “working towards the game.”

The message is cautious. Shaw and Baleba might make the squad, but neither looks set to be thrown straight into the starting XI.

That points to another outing for Patrick Dorgu at left-back. His derby display against City was flat, yet with Harry Amass apparently out of the frame, Carrick is short of alternatives on that flank.

On the opposite side, right-back remains a problem position rather than a platform. Neither Noussair Mazraoui nor Diogo Dalot has convinced in recent weeks, and Carrick is unlikely to risk both from the off. Dalot is still regarded as first choice, so he is expected to keep his place, with Mazraoui again the understudy.

At centre-back, the midweek audition did little to change the pecking order. Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro struggled to impose themselves against Brighton, opening the door for Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to return as the senior pairing.

Midfield continuity while Baleba waits

In midfield, the experiment against Brighton also backfired. Andrey Santos failed to grab his chance and is set to drop back to the bench.

That should restore the double pivot of Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans. Mainoo’s energy and Tielemans’ control remain Carrick’s go-to combination while Baleba works his way back to the level required to start.

Ahead of them, there is no debate at No.10. Captain Bruno Fernandes will once again pull the strings in the central creative role.

The real intrigue lies in the wide areas and up front.

Lacey to keep his place, Sesko under threat

If there was one bright spot in the Brighton defeat, it was Shea Lacey. The teenager was widely viewed as United’s standout performer on Wednesday, and that display may have forced Carrick’s hand.

Lacey is pushing hard for a start on the right wing, and the manager has every reason to reward him. His inclusion would allow a reshuffle in attack that could see a big name sacrificed.

Benjamin Sesko has yet to catch fire in a United shirt and was ineffective again in midweek. With Lacey stretching play from the flank, Carrick could move Bryan Mbeumo into the central striker role and leave Sesko on the bench.

On the left, it comes down to Matheu Cunha versus Marcus Rashford. Rashford has started twice in four days and has not hit top gear. Fatigue and form together might open the door for Cunha to get the nod, offering a slightly different profile cutting in from the left.
