Wayne Rooney Warns of Massive Blow for Manchester United Over Gabriel

Wayne Rooney has warned that losing 15-year-old sensation Gabriel would be a “massive blow” for Manchester United, as Europe’s giants close in on one of the club’s brightest academy talents.

The highly rated forward has submitted a request to leave Old Trafford, just weeks before his 16th birthday, throwing his future into doubt at a time when Madrid and Barca are closely tracking his situation.

A hat-trick that turned heads

Gabriel has not just been a name on a scouting report. He has already left a mark on the European stage.

On his UEFA Youth League debut, the teenager produced a stunning hat-trick against Sabah, a performance that underlined why some of the continent’s biggest clubs are circling. Three goals, on that platform, at his age, only sharpened the sense that United are fighting to keep a rare talent.

Rooney’s alarm over a “special” talent

“I have seen JJ grow up, he has been in [my son] Kai's team,” Rooney said on the Stick To Football podcast on Disney+. “Anyone close to it knew that was coming. In fairness to Manchester United they have done everything, absolutely everything, to keep him at the club.

“The club have treated him probably differently to the other players because he is such a special player. I know, I recognise that, because I was that player at Everton. I was getting that treatment at Everton.

“As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players. It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid. You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”

Rooney’s words carry weight. He knows what it looks like when a teenage prodigy stands on the brink of a major decision, because he once was that teenager.

Built for the top level?

Rooney is convinced Gabriel has the tools to reach the very top. He highlighted the youngster’s composure, balance and knack for scoring goals even when pushed up age groups.

“He is a top player,” Rooney said. “His ability, his balance, he has shown he can go up the ages and score goals. The next step is first-team football where it's different, and you never know until you're in there.

“But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”

That line stings for United: in Rooney’s view, Gabriel was on course to break into the first team this season. Instead, the club now finds itself scrambling to change his mind.

United fighting to keep him

Despite the transfer request, United have not given up. Inside the club, there remains hope that the situation can be repaired and that Gabriel can be persuaded to commit his future to Old Trafford.
