Juventus Fined €10,000 for Disrupting Tribute to Sandro Mazzola

Lega Serie A has fined Juventus €10,000 after a section of their supporters disrupted the minute’s silence for Inter and Italy icon Sandro Mazzola at the weekend.

Mazzola, one of the defining figures of Italian football, died on Saturday at the age of 83. The league ordered a minute’s silence before every Serie A fixture as a unified tribute to the former Inter forward and Azzurri legend.

At the Allianz Stadium, the moment fractured.

Before kick-off in Juventus’ match against Atalanta, players from both sides lined up to honour Mazzola. While most of the ground observed the silence, a group of fans in the Curva Sud turned their backs to the pitch. During the tribute, they began chanting in honour of several of Juventus’ own former greats, breaking the atmosphere of respect intended for Mazzola.

The scenes drew immediate and heavy criticism from across the Italian football landscape. Juventus moved quickly after the final whistle, issuing an official statement publicly condemning the behaviour of those involved and distancing the club from the actions of that section of the support.

Lega Serie A has now formalised its response with a €10,000 sanction against the Turin club for failing to ensure the proper observance of the league-wide tribute.

A minute’s silence is usually the one moment when rivalry pauses in Italian stadiums. This time, it has left Juventus counting the cost — financially, and in the court of public opinion.
