Rio Ferdinand's Advice: Move Rashford to Center-Forward for United
Manchester United head into the international break with more questions than answers, and one of their former greats believes the solution is staring Michael Carrick in the face.
Five points from five Premier League games. Twelfth in the table. Out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for the second season running. The numbers paint a bleak enough picture, but the running stats are even more damning.
- United rank 20th in the league for distance covered at high intensity.
- 20th for time spent at high intensity.
- 20th for sprints.
- 20th for time spent sprinting.
- 17th for percentage of time walking out of possession.
For a club that once suffocated opponents with relentless pressure, it is a jarring sight.
Ferdinand’s prescription: Rashford through the middle
Rio Ferdinand has seen enough. Looking at a side short of spark and short of goals, he believes a simple attacking reshuffle could at least give defenders something to worry about.
His call is clear: move Marcus Rashford into the centre-forward role and shift Matheus Cunha out to the left.
Carrick has so far persisted with Cunha as his No.9, even though the Brazilian’s natural game leans more towards drifting, linking play and attacking from wider or deeper areas. Rashford, meanwhile, has been eased back into the squad over the summer but is still searching for his first goal contribution of the campaign.
The contrast is stark. A forward line built around a makeshift striker, while a proven finisher operates away from the most dangerous area of the pitch.
Sesko waiting, Rashford misfiring, Cunha adapting
Benjamin Sesko, the only out-and-out centre-forward in the group, remains on the fringes. He has yet to start a Premier League match this season, despite carrying an impressive record under Carrick across all competitions.
Instead, United have leaned on Cunha’s versatility, and he finally opened his Premier League account for the season with a late equaliser at Craven Cottage in Sunday’s draw with Fulham. It was a crucial goal, but it did little to disguise how blunt United have looked for long spells.
Rashford, still goalless and without an assist, has been working his way back into rhythm. Ferdinand’s argument is that the best way to jolt him into life is to put him where it hurts opponents most – between the posts, on the shoulder of the last defender, forcing centre-backs to turn and run.
Cunha, shifted to the left, would then have the freedom to cut inside, combine and overload central areas, rather than acting as a back-to-goal focal point.
Three weeks, one big decision
Carrick now has three weeks to stew on it. United’s next assignment is a home clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 10, against a North London side still searching for their first win of the campaign.
Both teams will arrive under pressure. Both will know that another stutter could shape the narrative of their season.
Ferdinand’s suggestion is simple enough on paper: Rashford down the middle, Cunha off the left, with Sesko looming as the specialist option still waiting for a real chance.
The question is whether Carrick sticks with his current structure or gambles on a reshuffle that could either ignite United’s attack or expose just how deep their problems really run.
