Palmer setback underlines England’s fine margins

Of all the withdrawals, Palmer’s stands out. The Chelsea forward had only just worked his way back into the fold after missing out on the World Cup squad. His club form forced the door open again; now it closes, at least temporarily.

Palmer recently featured in Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Brentford and is understood to be stepping back due to a combination of load management and a minor injury concern. Club and country have agreed not to push the 24-year-old, wary of turning a manageable issue into something more serious.
