Tottenham's Pursuit of Cody Gakpo Amid Liverpool Uncertainty
Roberto De Zerbi has wasted no time reshaping Tottenham in his own image. The defence has already been ripped up and rebuilt with three new arrivals, a clear signal that the Italian wants control, structure and aggression from the back. Now his gaze has moved higher up the pitch.
And Spurs want to back him with a statement.
They have already seen a £75million bid for Sandro Tonali rejected by Newcastle United, a bold opening move for a central midfielder who would instantly change the tempo of their play. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is also on the radar as the club scours the market for the right profile to plug into De Zerbi’s intricate system.
Higher still, the recruitment drive stretches into the final third. Talks continue with Manchester City over a deal for Savinho, a player whose direct running and flair would add a different edge to Tottenham’s attack.
Now another name has entered the frame. A big one.
Spurs circle as Gakpo’s Liverpool future hangs in the balance
Tottenham have been linked with a move for Cody Gakpo, with the Liverpool forward emerging as a serious option as De Zerbi looks to deepen his attacking options.
At Anfield last season, Gakpo was a near ever-present in the Premier League. The 27-year-old missed only two matches through injury and started 32 of his 36 appearances under Arne Slot. Seven goals, five assists, and a goal involvement roughly every third game underline a player who, while not always spectacular, contributed steadily across the campaign.
That club form has carried onto the biggest stage. Ronald Koeman named him in the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico, and Gakpo has hit the ground running. He has already scored twice and added an assist in a 5-1 demolition of Sweden in the Dutch side’s second group match, the kind of performance that sharpens interest and inflates price tags.
Liverpool’s stance, though, is the key to everything.
Signed in January 2023 for a fee believed to be between £35million and £45million, Gakpo represents a significant investment. The club would expect to recoup that outlay and more if they choose to cash in this summer. His position is strengthened further by the contract he penned only last year, understood to be worth around £250,000 a week and running for another four years. In simple terms, Liverpool hold the leverage.
There have been suggestions that the Reds are open to offers, that his future at Anfield is not entirely secure as the club reshapes its own attack. Every sharp turn, every goal at the World Cup only adds another layer of intrigue – and another few million to any asking price.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spurs are among the clubs exploring a deal. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he outlined the current state of play: Tottenham are interested, clubs are testing whether there is a path to an agreement, but Liverpool have not yet given the green light to any exit and remain happy with the Dutchman.
The timing complicates everything. With Gakpo in the thick of a World Cup campaign, no one expects a quick resolution. Romano stressed that a move is unlikely to happen “today or tomorrow”, with Liverpool facing a decision only once the tournament dust settles.
For De Zerbi and Tottenham, the equation is clear. If Liverpool decide to cash in, Spurs want to be at the front of the queue for a versatile, World Cup‑sharpened forward entering his prime. The question now is not whether Gakpo has suitors.
It is whether Liverpool are really prepared to let him go.
