He is the surgeon who operated on Gleison Bremer for cruciate ligament and meniscus damage and on Federico Gatti for a meniscus problem in recent years — a track record that underlines the seriousness of Thuram’s case.

The meeting with Sonnery Cottet will help determine whether conservative treatment is still an option or if Thuram must undergo surgery, a step that would almost certainly sideline him for a significant spell and reshape Luciano Spalletti’s early-season plans.

Spalletti has already allowed his concern to show. Speaking in Friday’s press conference, the Juventus coach admitted he was “very worried” about the midfielder’s condition, a blunt assessment that cut through any early-season optimism.
