The Stadium of Light gets its first taste of Premier League football this season on Sunday, and Sunderland already arrive with something to prove.

A 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town on opening day has put a dent in the early optimism around Regis Le Bris’ side. They showed flashes of what they can be – Nilson Angulo grabbed an equaliser and the attack carved out promising moments – but sloppy defending late on undid the work and sent them home empty-handed.

That sting felt sharper because of what came before. Sunderland’s pre-season had built a sense of momentum, with morale-boosting wins over Stade Rennais and RC Lens hinting at a team ready to punch upwards in the top flight. Now they walk out at the Stadium of Light needing a response, not a reminder of old frailties.

Injuries, bans and big calls

Le Bris does not have a full deck to play with.

On the left, Sunderland are without one of their key weapons. Winger Simon Adingra is ruled out for around six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season, a blow to the side’s pace and direct threat on that flank.

New summer signing Dayann Methalie also has to wait for his Premier League bow. The defender serves a one-match suspension, carried over from yellow-card accumulation in France last season, and is unavailable for Fulham’s visit.

There is fresh energy arriving, though. Jules Ahoka has completed his move from Royal Antwerp and is fully registered. He is expected to be involved on Sunday, most likely starting his Sunderland career from the bench as an option to change the tempo late on.

At the back, Le Bris finally has some breathing room. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off their pre-season fitness problems and are in contention, adding experience and physicality to a defence that creaked at Portman Road. Both will be pushing to line up alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava as the coach weighs up how bold or how cautious to be against Fulham’s attack.

With selection puzzles across the pitch, the decisions in both full-back and centre-back areas could define the tone of Sunderland’s afternoon.

Le Bris is expected to stick close to his core structure but with tweaks to tighten the back line and sharpen the press.
