St Johnstone Sign Swansea Youngster Joel Cotterill on Long-Term Deal

St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield with the capture of highly rated Swansea City youngster Joel Cotterill on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee and has signed a contract running until the summer of 2027, a clear statement that the Perth club see him as a key part of their future rather than a short-term fix.

From Swansea academy to Scottish Premiership

Cotterill arrives with a solid grounding. A product of Swansea’s academy, he made his senior debut for the Welsh club in 2022 before being sent out to learn the hard yards of senior football in England’s lower leagues with Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

The real audition for this move, though, came last season.

St Johnstone watched him up close as he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Dundee, where he made 11 Premiership appearances and scored once. Those months gave him a first-hand feel for the intensity of Scottish top-flight football – and gave Premiership scouts a clear look at what he can do on the ball.

A midfielder who wants the ball

Speaking to the club’s media after completing the move, Cotterill revealed how quickly the deal gathered pace.

"I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club," he said. That conversation was followed by some homework of his own as he tuned in to watch St Johnstone’s clash with Dundee on Wednesday night.

"I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play."

That style matters to him. Raised in Swansea’s possession-focused system, Cotterill made it clear he sees his future in a side that wants the ball.

"Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball."

Ready for the demands

His loan spells have already taken him through a variety of dressing rooms and divisions. Cotterill believes those experiences have hardened him for what lies ahead in Perth.

"I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership," he said.

"It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge."

St Johnstone now have a young midfielder who wants responsibility, embraces the ball and already knows the pace of this league. How quickly he turns that potential into influence in Perth will shape more than just his own career.
