Sergio Busquets Returns to Barcelona as Assistant Coach

Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona. Not in midfield this time, but on the touchline.

The club confirmed on Monday, August 17, that the former captain has returned as assistant coach of Barca Atletic, the reserve side that feeds the first team. It is the first official step in his coaching career, and it comes just months after he hung up his boots following his spell at Inter Miami.

For Barcelona, it is an emotional reunion. For Busquets, it is the start of a new profession.

From sabbatical talk to the training ground

When Busquets walked through the mixed zone after an Inter Miami match against the New England Revolution last October, the questions quickly turned to his future. Coaching? Management? Would he follow the path so many former Barcelona midfielders have taken?

"I think in the future, yes, but for now I prefer to take a sabbatical year," he said then.

The sabbatical did not last long. After a few quiet months away from the daily grind of elite football, he has chosen to come home and learn the trade where he became a legend.

Learning under Belletti, shaping the next wave

Busquets joins the staff of current Barca Atletic head coach Belletti, another former Barcelona defender who knows La Masia’s demands inside out. The two will work side by side with a clear mission: polish the club’s next generation and push the reserve team back up the Spanish league structure.

Busquets will be on the training pitch immediately, helping to guide young midfielders who grew up watching him dictate games at Camp Nou. His presence alone raises the bar. Now he has to transfer the reading of space, the timing, the calm under pressure – all the things that defined his playing career – into coaching sessions and matchdays.

Building his coaching credentials

This is not just a sentimental appointment. While assisting Belletti, Busquets will also work through his UEFA coaching licences, the formal pathway he needs to earn his senior head coaching badges.

The job at Barca Atletic gives him a live laboratory: real matches, real pressure, real responsibility, all while he completes the courses that will qualify him to take charge of a senior side in the future.
