JJ Gabriel's Departure to Barcelona Amid Manchester United Standoff

JJ Gabriel has left Manchester United in limbo and flown to Barcelona as the teenage forward pushes to cut ties with the club before his 16th birthday.

The 15-year-old, regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in United’s academy, has formally requested that his registration be cancelled with immediate effect. United have refused, and the situation has now spilled out of the training ground and onto the continent.

According to reports, Gabriel left the UK on Thursday, travelling via France before landing in Catalonia for talks. Barcelona’s interest is no secret. They brought him over in August for a tour of their facilities, where he met Lamine Yamal and were able to make their pitch in person.

Since then, the tension has only grown.

From hat-trick high to exile

Gabriel has not trained with United since a blistering UEFA Youth League debut in which he scored a hat-trick. That performance was followed, abruptly, by his omission from the squad for the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah – a decision that raised eyebrows inside and outside the club.

The teenager has not featured since. Instead, his future has become a tug-of-war.

Barcelona are at the front of the queue, but they are not alone. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all tracking developments, aware that a rare opportunity might open up within weeks.

Under normal rules, UK-based youngsters cannot move abroad until they turn 18. Gabriel is different. He holds an Irish passport, and that dual nationality clears the way for a move to an EU club as soon as he turns 16 on October 6.

That looming date now hangs over Old Trafford.

Carrick urges calm amid growing noise

United manager Michael Carrick faced a barrage of questions about Gabriel at his Friday press conference. He chose to dial down the temperature.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," Carrick said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.

"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

Carrick’s message was clear: the club wants to be seen protecting the player, even as the dispute over his registration rumbles on.

Deadline approaching

Gabriel will not feature in Friday’s Premier League 2 fixture against Brentford as the stand-off continues. If United hold firm and keep his registration, he will be blocked from joining another English club this season.

That does not shut the door on Europe. Quite the opposite.

With his 16th birthday just weeks away, the clock is ticking. If United and Gabriel’s camp can agree to sever his current ties, Barcelona or another European heavyweight will be ready to move.

If they cannot, United risk holding a player who no longer wants to be there, while Europe’s elite wait for their chance to strike.
