Romelu Lukaku Joins Fenerbahce to End Title Drought

Romelu Lukaku has landed in Istanbul. Fenerbahce announced the signing of the former Manchester United striker on Wednesday, delivering one of the standout transfers of the Turkish Super Lig summer.

The club kept the key details under wraps. No contract length, no transfer fee. Just the headline: Lukaku, 33 years old and still Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 93 goals, is now theirs.

In a video message to Fenerbahce supporters on social media, Lukaku kept it simple and direct.

"It's an honour and a privilege to be joining your club and to join this club," he said. "I'm fit, 100 percent, ready to go."

That last line will matter most to Fenerbahce fans.

A Career of Highs, Goals – and Setbacks

Lukaku arrives with a CV that stretches across Europe’s elite. Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Napoli. Goals in England, goals in Italy, goals on the biggest international stages. A glittering career, but one repeatedly interrupted by injuries.

He joined Napoli in the summer of 2024 and hit the ground running, helping deliver the Scudetto in his debut season. Then the story turned. An injury, a breakdown in relations with the club’s management, and last season he barely featured — just 64 minutes of playing time.

Even so, Belgium never turned away from their main man. He went to the 2026 World Cup and still delivered, scoring three times as Belgium pushed through to the quarter-finals before bowing out to eventual champions Spain.

The goals haven’t dried up. The minutes did. Fenerbahce are betting that will change.

Fenerbahce Load Up in Attack

Lukaku’s arrival adds serious weight to an attack that has already been upgraded. The club recently signed former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood, and now they have a centre-forward with a long record of carrying teams at the sharp end of the pitch.

For a club desperate to end a domestic drought, this is not subtle squad building. It’s a statement.

Fenerbahce have watched Galatasaray finish above them for four straight seasons, forced into the role of runners-up while their fiercest rivals celebrated. They have not lifted the Turkish league title since 2014. The wait has stretched into a second decade.

So they have turned to a striker who has made a career out of deciding tight games, bullying defences and thriving under pressure.

Lukaku says he is ready. Fenerbahce need him to be more than that. They need him to be the signing that finally flips the balance of power in Istanbul.
